Georgetown Comeback Attempt Falls Short in 13-9 Loss to Fairfield

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (1-4) battled back in the fourth quarter, cutting a five-goal deficit to two with just under four minutes to play, but Fairfield University (2-4) scored the final two goals of the game to sink the Hoyas, 13-9 at Cooper Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hoyas were held to two goals on six shots between the second and third quarter and entered the final period trailing, 10-5. Junior midfielder Peter Conley (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) helped ignite the offense, scoring both of his goals during a 4-1 run to open the fourth quarter. Overall, Georgetown outshot Fairfield 18-6 during the final quarter, but Stags' goalie Tyler Behring made seven saves in the fourth quarter to halt the comeback attempt.

Conley finished with two goals and two assists, while graduate student midfielder Joe Bucci (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and sophomore attack Stephen Quinzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) each scored two goals in the loss. Sophomore faceoff specialist Riley Mann (Naperville, Ill./Benet Academy) went 7-for-14 at the faceoff X with four ground balls.

Fairfield took an early lead, as Colin Burke's extra-man goal at the 11:38 mark and another from Joe Rodrigues three minutes later gave them a 2-0 lead.

For the second consecutive game, Bucci scored GU's first goal, on a feed from freshman attack Daniel Bucaro (East Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville), bringing the Hoyas within one, at 2-1. Sophomore midfielder Craig Berge (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) scored on an assist from Conley to tie the score at two, before Quinzi gave GU its first lead with 2:02 remaining in the first quarter with an unassisted goal.

The Stags dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Hoyas 5-1, as Bucci scored the Hoyas' lone goal during the frame. Fairfield took a commanding 7-4 lead into the half.

Quinzi opened the third quarter with an unassisted goal, bringing GU within two, at 7-5, but Fairfield again responded with a three-goal run. The Hoyas were held scoreless for the rest of the quarter to head into the fourth quarter trailing, 10-5

Conley brought Gerogetown's offense to life in the fourth quarter, scoring an unassisted goal just 18 seconds into the period. After a Fairfield goal, Conley scored again at the 7:16 mark to bring GU back within four goals, at 11-7. Sophomore attack Matt Behrens (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) picked up a rebound off the post and beat the goalie to the upper left corner to bring the Hoyas within three goals at the 5:11 mark. The Hoyas added another goal moments later, as Bucaro scored on the assist from junior midfielder Devon Lewis (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep). Bucaro's goal would be the Hoyas last.

Fairfield's Burke scored his fourth of the game to end GU's 3-0 run. TJ Neubauer added his fourth goal of the game, as the Blue & Gray fell, 13-9 for their second home loss of the season.

The Hoyas will host Hobart on Saturday, March 12, with the opening faceoff scheduled for noon. Saturday's game will be broadcast live on the Georgetown Athletics official website -- -- with Jeremy Huber and Earl Brewer providing the call.
