The Georgetown University softball team (7-26,1-7 BIG EAST) is taking a break from BIG EAST play on Wednesday, facing the Towson Tigers in a midweek nonconference matchup at Guy Mason Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
The Georgetown University softball team outpaced nonconference opponent Mount St. Mary's, 16-10, at Guy Mason Field last Wednesday. In the matchup the Hoyas belted out 14 hits en route to winning their second game of their four home appearances this season.
Senior Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) led the offense with a game-best four hits, bringing her to a season total of 37. Giovanniello went 4-for-5 at the plate, recording five RBI. Freshman Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) also added five RBI for the Hoyas on two hits. Georgetown rounded out the week dropping a three-game series against BIG EAST opponent Creighton.
Towson is currently on a four-game winning streak, defeating Drexel and Norfolk State University. Shelby Stracher, Holiday Cahill and Daria Edwards are each batting over .300 on the year, combing for 110 hits and 97 RBI. Blakely Thrower is the leader on the mound with a 1.49 ERA in 42.1 innings pitched.
The Hoyas are meeting the Tigers for the third time this season. The two teams last met for two games in the Charleston Southern Tournament during the opening weekend of the season back in February. The Tigers hold a small 7-5 advantage over Georgetown in the all-time series.
