BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team knocked out a season-high 20 hits and Simon Mathews (West Haven, Conn./Hopkins School/Temple) threw his third complete game of the year in a convincing 9-1 win over Xavier University on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference game at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, GU improved to 16-20 on the season and 2-3 in BIG EAST play, while the Musketeers fell to 13-23 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Mathews tied a career high with nine strikeouts while going the distance for the third time this season. He scattered six hits while allowing just one run. He faced the minimum over the final three innings and struck out the last two batters in the ninth inning.
Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) led a trio of Hoyas with three hits and also added three RBI and scored two runs. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) and Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) each also had three hits. Four other Hoyas had multi-hit efforts as 10-of-11 Georgetown batters hit safely. Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) had two hits and two RBI.
The game was scoreless through the first four innings despite Georgetown getting the leadoff man aboard in each frame.
GU broke the scoreless tie with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth. Webber lined a two-out double down the left field line and, after Weisenberg and Shirley reached via a walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively, scored when Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) was also hit by a pitch to give the Hoyas a 1-0 lead.
Xavier came right back to tie the score in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout.
Georgetown answered right back with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth, again scoring all three with two outs. After a double play erased a leadoff single, Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./Saint John's College HS) and Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) had consecutive singles to start a string of four-straight hits. Webber followed with a single up the middle to score Bernstein from third before Weisenberg roped a double into the left-center gap to push both Bernauer and Webber across the plate to give GU a 4-1 lead.
The Hoyas added a run in the seventh on a two-out, bases-loaded walk by Webber to score Bialkowski who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.
GU batted around in the eighth, scoring four times to extend to a comfortable 9-1 lead. Shirley and Hall led off the inning with back-to-back infield singles. After a fielder's choice put Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) on first and Shirley on third, Bialowski lined a single to center to score Shirley. Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) followed with an RBI single to left, pushing DeRenzi across the plate. Bernstein then walked to load the bases before Eric Garza (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan/TCU/San Jacinto) grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Bialkowski to score. An RBI single from Webber capped the scoring as Bushor touched home to give the Blue & Gray a 9-1 lead.
The two teams will wrap up their three-game series with the rubber match on Sunday at 1 p.m. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) will take the mound for the Blue & Gray. Live stats and web stream will be available at www.guhoyas.com.
Webber is 7-for-9 (.778) with three walks and has been on base 11 times in his past three games, raising his season batting average 60 points to .250.
