BETHESDA, Md. - Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) delivered a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Georgetown University baseball team over Xavier University, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference game at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, GU won the three-game series, 2-1, and improved to 17-20 on the season and 3-3 in BIG EAST play, while the Musketeers fell to 13-24 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
Weisenberg finished with two RBI on the day, while Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) had two hits and an RBI to lead the offense.
Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) started on the mound and went six strong innings, allowing just two runs while scattering seven hits. He struck out four. Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) fired two perfect innings in relief while David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) gave up a run with two strikeouts in one inning out of the bullpen.
Xavier opened the scoring in the top of the second with a two-run home run.
The Hoyas began chipping away, cutting the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the third. Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary's) led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Weisenberg. After a ground out moved Webber to third, he scored on a two-out double by Hall to make it 2-1.
The score remained the same until the seventh, thanks to some great defense from Hall, who threw out a runner at the plate to end the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the seventh Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./Saint John's College HS) singled and Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) doubled to put two runners in scoring position with no one out. After a Xavier pitching change, Bernstein scored and Bernauer moved to third on a wild throw from the pitcher on an errant pickoff attempt at third. One out later, Weisenberg lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Bernauer, giving the Hoyas a 3-2 lead.
Cushing fired perfect frames in the seventh and eighth innings, giving way to Ellingson in the ninth. However, Xavier's Andre Jernigan launched a one-out, opposite-field home run - his second of the game and BIG EAST - leading 10th of the season - to tie the game, 3-3. Ellingson struck out two of the final three batters to keep the game tied.
Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to left and was promptly moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Bernstein. After Bernauer flied out and Webber was intentionally walked, Weisenberg lined a 1-2 pitch over the right fielder's head to score Bushor and give GU its fourth walk-off win of the season.
Georgetown will close out its five-game homestand on Wednesday when it hosts its crosstown rival, George Washington, for a 7 p.m. game at Shirley Povich Field.
