No. 24 Hoyas Travel to No. 7 Maryland in Friday Night Matchup

Sept. 1, 2016

WASHINGTON - The No. 24 Georgetown University men's soccer squad will play at the No. 7 University of Maryland (1-0-1) on Friday evening at Ludwig Field at 7:30 p.m. The Hoyas are currently 0-2-0 on the season after opening the year at the Akron Classic.

Georgetown fell to then-No. 2 Akron, 1-0, in the first game of the season. The squad allowed a Zips goal in the final seconds of regulation. On Sunday, the Hoyas fell to West Virginia by a score of 1-0. Sophomore goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) was named to the all-tournament team after posting 14 saves in the opening weekend.

The Hoyas went 0-1-2 in preseason play tying Elon (1-1) and Duke (0-0), before falling to No. 17 Virginia by a score of 2-0. The Blue & Gray has a new look after losing six players to Major League Soccer from a season ago as well as two more key seniors.

Georgetown finished second in the BIG EAST Conference Preseason Poll with 71 points and two first-place votes, three points shy of tying Creighton with 74 points and five votes for first place. GU was last year's regular-season and tournament champion.

The Terps managed a 5-0 rout of Hartford in the home opener Monday night at Ludwig Field. Sophomore transfer Gordon Wild scored two goals in the win. Maryland rebounded from a 1-1 draw at No. 16 UCLA Friday night.

UMD downed top-seed and host Ohio State last season in Columbus to capture its fourth-straight league tournament championship. Maryland has won the Big Ten Tournament title in each of its first two seasons in the conference.

Georgetown is 2-28-1 in 31 total meetings between the squads. Last year, the Hoyas won, 2-1, at Shaw Field. Arun Basuljevic (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Alex Muyl each posted a goal and an assist in the victory. The Hoyas have won or tied the last three meetings, and are 1-9-0 in College Park.

Friday's contest kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased through the Maryland box office. The game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network Plus, and live stats are available at
