Jan. 24, 2017

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University swimming & diving freshman diver Margaret Barnhorst (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) has been named the BIG EAST Female Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week. The award, which was announced by the conference on Tuesday, recognizes Barnhorst's efforts in Georgetown's dual meet at Drexel University on Saturday.

Barnhorst narrowly edged her opponent from Drexel to win the 1-meter dive with a score of 273.98 to win by a margin of just .23 points. The freshman also took second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 237.68.

This is the first career weekly award for Barnhorst and the fourth of the season for the Blue & Gray. Last week, Katie Duncalf (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) earned the same honor after setting two McCarthy Pool records. Earlier this season, Morgan Conley (Winnetka, Ill./Chatham/New Trier School [N.J.]) and Jared Cooper-Vespa (Orange, Conn./The Hopkins School) swept the weekly awards following a dual meet win over Old Dominion.

Georgetown will close out its regular season on Saturday, February 11 when it travels to face Providence College in a meet that starts at 10 a.m. It will be GU's final tune-up before the BIG EAST Championships, February 22-25 in Long Island, N.Y.
