Georgetown Set for 2017 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University swimming & diving team departed campus this morning for the 2017 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships. The four-day meet, February 22-25, begins on Wednesday afternoon at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.

This will be Georgetown's first BIG EAST Championships appearance under first-year head coach Jack Leavitt. Both the men's and women's teams have finished second at each of the past three championships.

Last season, the Hoya men medaled 11 times in individual events and senior Jared Cooper-Vespa (Orange, Conn./The Hopkins School) and sophomore Ryan Blom (Hershey, Pa./Milton Hershey) will look to defend their titles in the 3- and 1-meter dives. Diving Coach Michael Tober was named the Men's Diving Coach of the Year. Georgetown will also look to repeat in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

On the women's side, the Hoyas reached the medal stand eight times last year. Junior Molly Fitzpatrick (Manchester, N.H./The Derryfield School) will look to defend her title in the 200-yard breaststroke.

The schedule for the 2017 BIG EAST Championships will consist of two sessions each day with the first session comprising of preliminary heats and the finals taking place in the second session.

Wednesday
Prelims (4 p.m.) - Men's 3-meter diving
Finals (6 p.m.) - 800-yard freestyle relay, men's 3-meter diving, 200-yard medley relay

Thursday
Prelims (10 a.m.) - 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle, women's 1-meter diving Finals (6 p.m.) - 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle, women's 1-meter diving, 200-yard freestyle relay

Friday
Prelims (10 a.m.) - 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, men's 1-meter diving
Finals (6 p.m.) - 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, men's 1-meter diving, 400-yard medley relay

Saturday
Prelims (10 a.m.) - 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, women's 3 meter diving
Finals (6 p.m.) - 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, women's 3 meter diving, 400-yard freestyle relay.
