ANNE ARUNDEL, Md. - Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) scored from second on an infield error in the top of the 10th inning as the Georgetown University baseball team defeated Coppin State, 6-5, on Wednesday evening at Joe Cannon Stadium. The Hoyas improved to 2-2 on the season, while the Eagles fell to 0-4.
Nick Leonard (Washington, D.C./Maret) started and was strong on the mound for the Hoyas. He went 6.0 innings giving up two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out five. Alex Deise (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. John's College HS [D.C.]/FSU) fired a perfect inning in the eighth while Noah Abdallah (Raleigh, N.C./Northern Highlands Regional [N.J.]) pitched a scoreless 10th for his first-career save.
Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) was on base all five times with three singles, a walk and a hit-by-pitch. He also stole two bases and scored a run. Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) also had two hits and was on base three times with a walk. Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) and Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) each finished with two RBI.
The Hoyas opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Stevens led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bernstein, who reached when the first baseman dropped the ball. A fielder's choice by Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley) forced Stevens at third for the first out before Hall lined a double into the left-centerfield gap to score both runners.
Coppin State got on the board in the bottom of the third on a two-out RBI single. The runner tried to extend it to a double, but DeRenzi cut him down at second with a perfect throw from right field. The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with an unearned run on two Georgetown errors.
The Hoyas retook the lead right back in the top of the seventh. DeRenzi led off with a single and moved to second when Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) reached on an error. Both runners moved up on a passed ball before Kuzbel lifted a sacrifice fly into left field to score DeRenzi and give GU a 3-2 lead.
Coppin State answered immediately with a run in the bottom of the seventh off of Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton).
Stevens led off the top of the eighth with a single. John Simourian (Andover, Mass./Phillips Andover) pinch ran and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Bernstein. Weisenberg followed with a line-drive double down the left field line to score Simourian and put GU back on top, 4-3.
Another sacrifice fly by Kuzbel in the bottom of the eighth scored DeRenzi, who had singled and stolen another base, to put the Hoyas up by two, 5-3.
The Eagles scored two runs off of Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Alban's) in the bottom of the ninth, on a bases loaded walk and wild pitch, to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
Bernstein drew a one-out walk in the top of the 10th and stole second. With two outs, Hall beat out the throw on what was ruled an error on the shortstop. Meanwhile, Bernstein rounded third and scored the eventual game-winning run as he just slid in before the tag.
Georgetown will travel south to Spartanburg, S.C., for three games this weekend. The Hoyas will play at USC Upstate at 4 p.m. on Friday before playing at Wofford at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The weekend will conclude with a neutral-site matchup against Dayton at noon on Sunday at Wofford's Russell C. King Field.
