WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University baseball team will make the short trip to Fairfax, Va., this weekend for a three-game, two day series against George Mason University. Live stats and a video stream for all three games will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. Live updates can be found on the team's twitter account: @GtownBaseball.
The weekend series has been adjusted due to Friday's inclement weather. Originally slated to play Friday's game at Shirley Povich Field, all three games will now be played at George Mason's Spuhler Field. The Hoyas and Patriots will now play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at noon, with the series finale as scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
On Tuesday, junior outfielder Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for his efforts in Georgetown's four games last week. DeRenzi batted .500 (9-for-18) with a .526 on-base percentage and a .556 slugging percentage, while adding four RBI and three runs scored. He started the week with a four-hit, four-RBI effort in a 14-4 win over Coppin State in the home opener at Shirley Povich Field. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader at Brown, DeRenzi had two hits, including a double, before reaching base four times with three hits and a walk in the nightcap. He also stole a base and scored three runs.
DeRenzi leads the Hoyas with a .398 batting average and is also tops on the team with three home runs, three triples, 28 RBI and nine stolen bases. Jake Kuzbel (Ashburn, Va./Stone Ridge) ranks second on the team with a .370 batting average and is also second with 26 RBI. Zach Racusin (Morristown, N.J./Salisbury School/Marist) and Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) are batting .356 and .353, respectively.
George Mason enters the weekend with a 9-15 overall record, and sits at 2-1 in Atlantic 10 play. The Patriots, who lost at UMBC on Wednesday evening, are batting just .240 as a team, but have hit 20 home runs and 40 doubles through 24 games. The pitching staff owns a 4.95 ERA and a 171-99 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
