WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team concluded its trip to the Lone Star State on Tuesday by falling to Houston by a score of 10-0, moving the Hoyas to 4-15 on the season.
Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) started on the mound for GU, going 2.2 innings and giving up five earned runs on seven hits while striking out three. Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison) came on in relief to pitch the final 1.1 innings and did not give up a run. Houston would score two runs in the first inning before plating eight runs in the third inning on the way to the victory.
The Hoyas had two quality scoring attempts throughout the game. Mallory Bennett (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) led off the game with back-to-back singles. However, the runners were stranded after two strikeouts and a flyout to end the inning.
The other quality scoring chance came in the fourth inning. Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) walked to start the inning and moved to second after a wild pitch. Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) then singled to put runners on the corners and moved up to second on another wild pitch. However, the Cougars were able to escape the jam with three-straight outs.
The Hoyas will return to action for their home opener on Wednesday, March 15 which will be a doubleheader against Rider. The twin bill will begin at 11 a.m. and will be played at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
