WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team defeated Providence in the series opener on Saturday by a score of 6-4. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 9-19 and 2-2 in BIG EAST Conference play while Providence falls to 8-17 and 0-4 in conference play.
Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) started on the mound and went the distance. She went seven innings giving up four runs on five hits while striking out 11.
The Blue & Gray opened the scoring in the third inning. Alexa Dolby (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Delaney Darden (Tustin, Calif./Beckman). Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) grounded out to advance Dolby to third with two outs. Dolby would then score on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead.
After the Friars took a 4-1 lead, GU cracked back with three runs of its own in the sixth inning. Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) led off the inning with double into right field. Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) then walked to put runners on second and third. Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) smashed her fourth home run of the season to center field to tie the game, 4-4.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Hoyas started the inning with an infield single by Darden. After consecutive fielder's choices had Kane on first base with two outs to set the table for Bennett, she stepped up and launched her team-leading fifth home run of the season this time in walk-off fashion.
