WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team continues BIG EAST Conference play this weekend with a home series against Villanova. The series will begin on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Guy Mason Field. The two teams enter the weekend in a tie for fifth place in the conference standings with 4-5 records.
The last meeting between the two teams came in 2016 with the Wildcats (21-13) taking two of three games. The Hoyas (11-24) won the second game of the series, which snapped a 17-game winning streak for Villanova. Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) and Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) each picked up RBI in the winning effort and Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) had a pair of hits.
The Blue & Gray is coming off a tough midweek loss against Mount St. Mary's which saw GU outhit the Mount by an 11-4 margin. The Mount led from the beginning after building a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning. Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) and Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) picked up one RBI apiece in the effort.
Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. She went 1-1 last weekend and only gave up two runs in 13 innings of work. The conference's leader in strikeouts, Pacha added 21 to her total, leaving her at 143 on the season, which ranks 26th nationally. Pacha's three wins in conference play are tied for the most in the league.
Belknap enters the game as the BIG EAST's leading hitter with 50 hits and has a .410 batting average, which is good for second in the league. Kane is leading the conference with four triples. There are four hitters after Belknap that who hitting above .300. Elvina is second with a .356 batting average, Ciara Sullivan (Middletown, N.J./Middletown) is hitting .316, Kane is hitting .307, and Holiday is at .306. Holiday enters with six home runs and 21 RBI, which are both team highs.
