WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's tennis team (12-4) defeated the Navy Academy (17-11) on Friday by a score of 4-3. It was Senior Day for the Class of 2017 as Sophia Barnard (Mill Neck, N.Y./Portledge School), Madeline Foley (Salt Lake City, Utah/Rowland Hall St. Marks), Margaret Psyhogeos (Wellesley, Mass./Noble and Greenough) and Victoire Saperstein (Las Vegas, Nev./Odyssey Charter School) were honored prior to the match.
This is one of the most special groups I've ever coached," said Georgetown Head Coach Gordie Ernst. "They are all so different, but they're like four sisters and it's been wonderful to see them grow and mature together. They are the type of group that makes you excited to get out of bed every day and come to work, they're so dedicated to the team. We will have one of the highest seeds in program history going into the BIG EAST Championship and they are a huge reason for that."
The Blue & Gray got off to a hot start by winning a tightly-contested doubles point. The Hoyas picked up victories at No. 1 with Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) and Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va./Langley High School) winning by a score of 6-2. Saperstein and Casey Marx (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) won at No. 2 by a score of 6-4.
The Hoyas continued their strong play in singles action. Nakagawa picked up her second match of the day at No. 3 by a score of 6-4, 7-5 and Sarah Swift (Vail, Colo./Saint Edward's School) won at No. 2 by a score of 6-4, 6-3. Drew Spinosa (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) clinched that match with a huge win at No. 5 by a score of 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.
"Drew is the quintessential competitor and she thrives on it," said Georgetown Head Coach Gordie Ernst. "She's been doing it all year and taken the team by storm. Her competitive spirit is second to none."
Georgetown returns to the court on Saturday, April 22 for a match at Villanova beginning at noon. It is the regular season finale.
