WASHINGTON - Georgetown Athletics invites you to attend a retirement party for Cargo Shorts at the men’s lacrosse game on Saturday, April 29, against St. John’s at noon at Cooper Field.
Join us as we honor and say farewell to Cargo Shorts for their 80+ years of service. First worn by members of the British Armed Forces in 1938, and introduced to the United States in the mid-1940s during World War II, Cargo Shorts have been a staple of warm weather fashion all across the country but their time has come to an end. With the growing popularity of the sleek look of khaki shorts, bulging exterior pockets, once the major selling point of the shorts, have gone by the wayside.
“I think they need to go,” Georgetown student Anastasia said about the shorts recently. “It’s just not a good look anymore. No one needs that many pockets! They are unnecessarily bulky.”
Georgetown Athletics will celebrate the life and times of the shorts in several special ways. There is an online retirement speech writing contest, where fans can submit their farewell speeches for a chance to win some great prizes (not cargo shorts).
There will be a cargo shorts donation box for fans to finally part with those pairs that they have been holding on to for the past however many years. The fan who donates the pair with the most pockets will be proclaimed the ‘Cargo King/Queen’ and be treated to a Georgetown bookstore gift card.
All fans who donate a pair will also be invited to have a piece of a special cargo shorts retirement cake (not made of cargo shorts). Those who do not want to donate but are ready to make the change are encouraged to visit a de-pocketing station, where tools will be provided to remove those unwanted exterior pockets.
Inside Cooper Field there will be a space reserved as an intervention area. In this area, fans are encouraged to confront family members and friends who are having trouble coping with separating themselves from their beloved cargo shorts. For the stalwarts who will never take the leap, a cargo-short safe seating area will be roped off in the stands.
