WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team travels to New York on Friday for a weekend BIG EAST Conference series at St. John's. The Hoyas enter the weekend at an 11-31 mark and 4-10 in conference play, while the first-place Red Storm are sitting at 24-15 and 11-4 in league play.
The last meeting between the two teams came in 2016 when the Hoyas hosted St. John's to begin conference play. St. Johns took the series 2-1. Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep), Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington), and Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) each tallied multiple-hit games in the series.
In conference play, the Blue & Gray are coming off an 0-2 weekend against DePaul and a midweek loss to George Mason in extra innings on Wednesday. Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) picked up the lone RBI in the effort, with a double in extra innings to plate Hannah Ramsey (Buda, Texas/ Jack C. Hays).
Kane was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. She had four hits in two games against DePaul and also tallied four hits in a midweek matchup against Virginia. She hit .727 and added five stolen bases over the three-game span.
Belknap enters the game as the BIG EAST's leading hitter with 57 hits and a .388 batting average, which is good for second. Elvina is second on the team with a .342 batting average, and Kane is hitting .326. Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) is just off the pace, hitting .297, but her six home runs are a team-high and she also has 24 RBI which is tied with Bennett for the team-best.
In the circle, Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) is the conference leader in strikeouts with 158 total and is also third in innings pitched at 140.
Saturday slate of games will include a doubleheader beginning at noon and the series will conclude with a noon matchup on Sunday. Live stats for the games can be found at www.GUHoyas.com. Sunday's game will be broadcasted live ESPN3.
