WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's golf team arrived in South Carolina on Friday and played a practice round on Saturday in advance of defending its BIG EAST Championship over the next three days at Callawassie Island.
The Hoyas, who cruised to a 27-shot win in last year's BIG EAST Championship, will tee off on Sunday, April 30 at the Callawassie Island Golf Club at 8 a.m. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will continue on Monday, May 1 and conclude on Tuesday, May 2. The Championship will be played on the Dogwood and Magnolia Courses. Live stats will be available on GolfStat.com.
The team winner will earn the BIG EAST's automatic berth into the 2017 NCAA Championship field.
Georgetown enters this year's Championship as the No. 3 seed, trailing top-seeded Marquette and second-seeded Seton Hall, who is led by defending individual champion Lloyd Jefferson-Go, who fired a 6-under par 210, including a championship and course record 7-under par 65 in the second round.
"We are excited to get back to Callawassiee and compete in the Big East Championship," Head Coach Tommy Hunter said. "The golf course is challenging and the members have created a terrific atmosphere for all the players and coaches. Keeping the ball in front of us and consistent chipping and putting are required to do well. It should be a great championship."
The Hoyas are led by a pair of All-BIG EAST selections, juniors Sam Madsen (Madison, Wis./Cardinal Gibbons [Fla.]) and Cole Berman (Philadelphia, Pa./The Haverford School).
Madsen, an All-BIG EAST First Team selection, was the runner-up at least year's BIG EAST Championship, shooting a 3-under par 213 (70-70-73). He enters the BIG EAST ranked among the top 10 in the league in stroke average, leading the Hoyas at 73.44 through 27 rounds this season. He has three top-five finishes this year and four among the top 20 overall. Madsen finished in second place at the Georgetown Intercollegiate in the fall (9-under par 204) and closed out the regular season with a second place showing at the Rutherford Intercollegiate (1-under par 212).
Berman, an All-BIG EAST second team pick, finished in a tie for third place last year at 2-under par 214 (72-71-71). He is second on the team with a 73.70 stroke average in 27 rounds this year. He has one top-10 finish this year and three among the top 20.
The Georgetown lineup will be rounded out by junior Jack Musgrave (Chesterton, Ind./Andrean), sophomore Kevin Jackson (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) and freshman Eduardo Blochtein (Delray Beach, Fla./Spanish River). Musgrave tied for ninth place at last year's BIG EAST Championship (6-over par 222). He is third on the team in stroke average this year at 74.37 and closed out the spring with three-straight top-20 finishes.
