WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team dropped a pair of games to St. John's on Sunday, losing game one 9-0 and the rubber match ended 9-2. The Hoyas dropped to 11-34 and 4-13 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Red Storm improved to 27-15, and 14-4 in league play.
Game 1: St. John's 9, Georgetown 0
Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) started in the circle for GU. She went 1.2 innings and gave up five runs on three hits while striking out two. Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison) came on in relief for the final 2.1 innings and gave up four runs on seven hits while striking out four.
The Red Storm used a big six-run second inning and added three runs in the fourth inning to earn the victory.
Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) had the lone hit of the game for the Hoyas. Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) reached base twice with a walk and was hit by a pitch and Noelle Holiday (Bear. Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) also reached base on a walk.
Game 2: St. John's 9, Georgetown 2
Casey Kozak (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) started on the rubber, and went .2 innings while giving up five runs on five hits. Pacha came on in relief, she went two innings,giving up four runs on seven hits. Vannicola made her second relief appearance if the day, she went 3.1 innings and did not allow a run.
St. John's got off to a quick start by scoring five runs in the first inning to build an early lead. However, the Hoyas bounced back with a run in the second inning. This came off the bat of Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) who launched a solo shot to left field to draw GU to within four at 5-1.
The Blue & Gray added another run in the third inning. Olivia Russ (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) led off the inning with a single into right field and advanced to second on a groundout by Belknap. Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) then flied out to right field to advance Russ. A throwing error by the St. John's right fielder allowed Russ to hurry home from third.
St. John's added four runs in the fourth inning on the way to the win.
Belknap and Bennett also added hits for GU.
