LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Georgetown University track & field team is in Lexington, Ky., for the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Preliminary Championships. The three-day meet, hosted by the University of Kentucky, serves as the precursor to the final site of the championships in Eugene, Ore. The Hoyas have a competitor in every middle distance and distance event on both the men's and women's side. A live stream of the event will be available on the SEC Network+, available through the WatchESPN app.
Ever the middle distance / distance powerhouse, Georgetown University boasts 14 competitors in Lexington with a men's and women's student-athlete in each of the following events: 800m; 1,500m; 5,000m; 10,000m; 3,000m steeplechase.
"Georgetown is on of very few universities in the country that has an individual competing in every middle distance and distance event on both the men's and women's sides, proof of the depth of our roster and talent on our team," Director of Track & Field / Cross Country Julie Culley said. "The goal is to advance as many athletes as we can to the NCAA finals in Eugene next month. We are primed and ready for great performances this weekend and look forward to big races the next few days."
A quintet of Hoyas look to return to historic Hayward Field, the finals site of the championships as All-Americans Scott Carpenter (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial), Darren Fahy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon), Jonathan Green (Berlin, Mass./Saint John's High School), Emma Keenan (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) and Joe White (Clifton, N.J./DePaul Catholic) have all competed in the semifinals and finals in their respective events.
Fahy and White boast BIG EAST titles in the steeplechase and the 800-meter run, their respective events, while Carpenter was the BE runner-up in the steeple. Competing in the 5,000-meter run rather than the 10,000-meter run, Green was also a runner-up at the outdoor conference championships. Additionally, Keenan was a runner-up in the 800-meter run.
A mixture of experience and youth will represent the Blue & Gray as an array of new faces will join the five veterans. Eion Nohilly (Golden's Bridge, N.Y./John Jay) will be the third Hoya in the steeplechase mix as he joins Carpenter and Fahy. He finished third in the event at the BIG EAST championships to clinch the GU steeple sweep.
Autumn Eastman (Hinesburg, Vt./Champlain Valley Union), in her first season of steeplechase competition, will compete in the first round. She turned in a second-place performance at the BIG EAST championships. All-Americans Piper Donaghu (Portland, Ore./Grant) and Kennedy Weisner (St. Marys, Pa./Elk County Catholic), both part of a championship 4x800-meter squad at the league championships two weeks ago, will compete in the 1,500-meter first round. All-BIG EAST performer Madeline Perez (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) will be in the fray in the women's 10,000-meter first round.
