WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's volleyball team released its 2017 schedule on Tuesday. The Hoyas will take part in four tournaments to open the season before moving on to the highly-competitive BIG EAST Conference slate.
The Hoyas open the season with a trio of local tournaments in back-to-back-to-back weekends. Georgetown gets things going on August 25 against local foe Howard as part of the annual D.C. Challenge, followed by matches against Santa Clara and Ward 3 rival American University on August 26.
Heading across the Potomac the next weekend, the Blue & Gray will take part in the Service Academy Challenge on September 1-2. Opening the tournament on Friday against The Citadel at the Pentagon, GU also faces Columbia and Army West Point in consecutive contests on Saturday at Ft. Myer in Arlington, Va.
Wrapping up the trio of D.C. area events, the Hoyas once against host the Georgetown Classic at McDonough Arena on the Hilltop from September 8-9. Welcoming James Madison to the Nation's Capital on Friday, the Blue & Gray then face off against Coppin State and Buffalo on Saturday.
Closing out nonconference play, the Hoyas then travel to the Lone Star State to take part in the Rice Invitational II on September 15-16. Georgetown plays Arkansas State and Stephen F. Austin on Friday while wrapping up the event against the host Owls on Saturday.
BIG EAST action begins on the road for GU with a trek to defending league champion Creighton on September 22 followed by a cross-country flight to Providence two days later. The Hoyas then welcome Butler and Xavier on Sept. 29 and 30, respectively, to open home conference play at McDonough Arena.
Alternating single home and away matches against Seton Hall, Villanova and St. John's over the next two weeks, the Blue & Gray returns home to welcome DePaul and Marquette to D.C. the weekend of October 14-15.
Five of the next seven matches are road tilts for GU to begin the second half of the league slate. Georgetown wraps up the regular season schedule at home against Providence and Creighton on November 17-18.
The 2017 BIG EAST Championships will take place November 24-25 in Milwaukee, Wis., hosted by Marquette.
Georgetown ended the 2016 campaign with a 7-24 overall record and a 3-15 mark in league play. The Hoyas graduated just two seniors and return 13 letterwinners for 2017, including 2016 All-BIG EAST Second Team standout Symone Speech (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest).
