WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's soccer team is back in action on Thursday, Aug. 24, visiting Delaware, its first road game of the season. Kickoff at Grant Stadium in Newark, Del. is slated for 7 p.m.
Live stats and a stream of the game will be available through the Georgetown Athletics website, www.GuHoyas.com.
The Hoyas, ranked No. 11 in the country by the United Soccer Coaches, opened the season last weekend, splitting a pair of games. GU opened the season with a 1-0 loss to then-No. 1 West Virginia, last Friday before coming back to beat George Washington, 4-0, on Sunday.
Sophomore Amanda Carolan (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) and senior Elizabeth Wenger (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) were named the BIG EAST Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, while senior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla Country Day/UCLA) was selected to the weekly honor roll earlier this week.
Carolan was one of three players to record a goal and an assist in Georgetown's 4-0 win over GW on Sunday. She set up the game-winning goal in the 49th minute with an assist to freshman Jenna Menta (Lincolndale, N.Y./Somers Senior). Carolan, the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year in 2016, added an insurance goal in the final minutes.
Wenger, the BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, anchored a defense which surrendered just one goal over the weekend, while allowing only 12 shots over the two games. The lone goal was scored by West Virginia in Friday's season opener. Schechtman, the BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year, earned her first shutout of the season in Georgetown's 4-0 victory over GW. She made six saves on the weekend.
Carolan leads the Hoyas in scoring with three points, tied for the lead with senior midfielder Rachel Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Pingry) and sophomore forward Casey Richards (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands). Corboz, the BIG EAST Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and a MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List selection, moved into a tie for sixth all-time in goals scored at Georgetown (26) with her second half score.
This will be the seventh all-time meeting between Georgetown and Delaware, with the Hoyas leading the head-to-head series, 6-0. Georgetown posted a 4-0 win over the Blue Hens last season, with then-senior Grace Damaska scoring three times. Corboz assisted on three goals, while junior forward Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) added an assist. The Hoyas are 3-0 in games played at Delaware. Corboz scored a goal in GU's 2-0 win on the road in 2015.
