WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer squad (1-0) will host the No. 19 Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers (0-1) on Monday afternoon at Shaw Field in the squad's home opener for the 2017 season. The Hoyas are coming off of a 2-0 victory at American University on Friday.
In the win at AU, the Hoyas used a goal in the 12th minute from junior midfielder Ethan Lochner (New York, N.Y./Stuyvesant) to get on the board. The Blue & Gray sealed the 2-0 victory with a goal from sophomore forward Achara (Enugu, Nigeria/Berkshire School [Mass.]) in the 41st minute. Georgetown outshot American, 14-6, and the Hoyas were awarded five corner kicks while the Eagles did not attempt any. Junior goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski (Alamo, Calif./De La Salle) took the win managing three saves.
It was GU's first season-opening win since 2012.
GU was picked fifth in the BIG EAST Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Additionally, Marcinkowski was named the BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year and senior midfielder Christopher Lema (Ridgefield, N.J./Ridgefield Memorial) earned a spot on the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad.
The Chanticleers started the 2017 season at George Mason in a narrow 2-1 loss. It was a match which saw Coastal control the game from the opening kick, but not find the back of the net in the one-goal loss. Yazeed Matthews picked up a loose ball in front of the net to even the match at one in the 38th minute, but it was not enough. The reigning Sun Belt Conference Champions were picked to repeat that championship by a vote of the league's head coaches. The squad also had five players named Preseason All-Sun Belt.
The teams have met once before when the Hoyas won, 3-0, at the Davidson Tournament in 2009.
Monday's contest will be available through a live stream featuring Dan Helfrich and Tom Greaser. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
