– The Georgetown University men's soccer squad will continue BIG EAST Conference play on Saturday hosting the Villanova University Wildcats at 3 p.m. at Shaw Field. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) GUHoyas.com with alum Dan Helfrich calling the action. The Hoyas are currently 6-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play.
On Monday, junior defender Dylan Nealis
(Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week. Additionally, senior midfielder Kyle Zajec
(Westport, Conn. / Staples) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Nealis led the Hoyas defense to their second consecutive BIG EAST shutout, topping Butler on Friday, 2-0. The Bulldogs were limited to just two shots on goal, while Nealis also added the game-winning goal in the 18th minute. Zajec had a goal and assist in the Hoyas' win at Butler. The senior assisted on Nealis' game winner in the 18th minute before adding an insurance score off a penalty kick in the 53rd minute.
Also on Monday, the Blue & Gray played the University of Maryland to a scoreless tie at Shaw Field. Freshman goalkeeper Giannis Nikopolidis
(Athens, Greece / Nea Genia Zirdi) tallied his sixth shutout of the season as the Hoyas finished nonconference play with a mark of 4-3-2.
Sophomore forward Derek Dodson
(Aurora, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley) and Zajec are leading the team in scoring with 10 points apiece. Dodson has tallied five goals on the year, while Zajec has three goals and a squad-best four assists. They are followed by junior forward Achara
(Enugu, Nigeria / Berkshire School [Mass.]) who has nine points for the season with four goals and an assist. Nealis rounds out the top four with a goal and four assists for six points on the year. Nikopolidis has played in 10 games and tallied 34 saves with a 0.86 GAA.
Villanova is 6-4-1 overall and 1-3-0 in BIG EAST play. The Wildcats are led by senior midfielder Zach Zandi and sophomore Yusuf Cueceoglu who have five goals apiece. Zandi has tallied two assist for 12 points, while Cueceoglu has managed one helper to account for 11 points on the season. Carson Williams has played every minute in goal with 45 saves and three shutouts to his credit.
The Hoyas are 26-11-5 all-time against the 'Cats. The last meeting was a 2-0 win for the Hoyas at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. Zajec and Zach Knudson
scored in the victory. The last game at Shaw Field was a 3-2 GU victory. Villanova scored first, but the Hoyas answered with three goals to pick up the win.
