Georgetown University senior middle blocker Symone Speech
(Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park-River Forest) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday. Speech led the Hoyas to a pair of road sweeps over the weekend in BIG EAST action.
In addition, senior outside hitter Alyssa Sinnette
(Pearland, Texas / Dawson) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Speech was previously named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 18.
Georgetown defeated Butler, 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-21), on Friday in Indianapolis before sweeping Xavier, 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-23) on Saturday in Cincinnati. Saturday's victory was the first win over the Musketeers in program history.
Speech led the Hoyas defensively with 1.83 blocks per set and an impressive 1.50 digs per set as a middle blocker. She had five blocks to go with seven kills against Butler and added a match-high 12 kills to go with six blocks and seven assists in the sweep over Xavier.
Sinnette led the Hoyas with 3.83 kills per set. She posted a match-high 15 kills to go with six digs and three aces at Butler and added another eight kills in the sweep at Xavier.
Georgetown is 12-7 on the season and 5-2 in league play. The Hoyas have posted their most wins overall and in conference action since the 2011 season. Their 5-2 start in the BIG EAST is the best since the 2001 campaign.
The Hoyas return to action next weekend as they wrap up the first half of BIG EAST play at home against No. 10 Creighton and Providence.
