WASHINGTON - The No. 24/RV Georgetown University women's lacrosse team managed an early run and never looked back as the Hoyas defeated the University of Cincinnati Bearcats in the BIG EAST Conference matchup on Saturday in Ohio. The Blue & Gray is currently 6-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.
"It was a big conference win today," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. "We competed well in all aspects and had contributions from many different players."
Sophomore attacker Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) led the way with two goals and three assists, while junior attacker Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) posted three goals and one assist. Junior attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) had two goals and one assist, while senior midfielder Hannah Seibel (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) connected on two goals and one assist. Rounding out those with multiple goals was freshman attacker Caroline Frock (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) who managed two goals. It was a balanced attack as 11 different Hoyas scored in the victory.
Junior goalkeeper Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) played all 60 minutes in the cage tallying 11 saves on the afternoon.
The Hoyas outshot the Bearcats, 41-31, and pulled in 15 draw controls to Cincinnati's 13. The defense forced 16 Bearcats turnovers and GU committed 14 in the contest.
The Bearcats scored in the second minute of play, but the Hoyas came back with a 5-0 run as Gebhardt tallied the unassisted goal off of the draw control. She was followed by scores from Bruno and Frock before freshman midfielder Mary Pagano (Short Hills, N.J./Pingry School) hit her second of the season at 16:31. Seibel then tallied her first of the game to make it 5-1 at 15:33.
Cincinnati scored to end the run, but GU came right back and scored one more as sophomore attacker Emily Ehle (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) managed a goal at 11:53 to begin a 3-0 run for the Blue & Gray. The Bearcats made the score 8-3 at 7:30, but graduate student Cristina McCarthy (Rockville, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross/James Madison) and senior midfielder Rachel Rausa (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) scored just 30 seconds apart to put the Hoyas ahead by seven, 10-3.
Following a pair of late UC goals, the Hoyas went into the half leading, 10-5.
Bruno opened the second half with a goal at 29:11, and Frock scored her second of the contest on the assist from Gebhardt just seconds later.
Following a Cincinnati goal, Ryan managed back-to-back goals before Gebhardt and Seibel scored two more as the Hoyas led by 10, 16-6.
The Bearcats attempted a comeback with four late goals, but it was not enough to overcome GU's lead as the Hoyas nabbed the 16-10 victory.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Wednesday as the squad travels to No. 25/RV Denver in another conference battle. The opening draw is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET. Live stats and a webcast of the game will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
