Box Score

BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team got back into the win column, defeating La Salle, 8-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Shirley Povich Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 15-23 on the season, while the Explorers fall to 14-26.

Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va./Oakton) started on the mound and picked up his second win of the year as he went 5.0 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on 11 hits. He struck out four. Matt Randolph (Concord, N.C./Cannon School/Emory) fired two hitless innings of relief with two strikeouts. Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) struck out two in a perfect inning and Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) had a scoreless inning for his seventh save of the season.

Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) led the offense with a 5-for-5 performance, his second game with at least five hits in the last five contests. He also scored a run, stole a base and had two RBIs. Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) and Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) each had two hits, and Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) was on base three times with a hit and two walks.

The Hoyas broke the game open early with eight runs in the bottom of the first inning. A single by Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS), double by Davis and walk to Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) quickly loaded the bases with nobody out. Bernstein scored on a wild pitch before Bernauer drove in Davis on a single. A sacrifice fly by Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) scored McCabe to make it 3-0. A walk to Stevens and a Weisenberg single reloaded the bases before Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) delivered GU's second sacrifice fly of the inning to plate Bernauer. Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) walked to again load the bases before two runs scored on a dropped line drive in left field. A two-run single by Ryan M. Davis capped the scoring and gave the Hoyas an 8-0 advantage.

La Salle cut GU's lead in half, 8-4, with four runs, three of which were earned, in the top of the third. The Explorers added another run in the fifth to make it 8-5, but the Georgetown bullpen shut the door the rest of the way, only allowing one base runner in the final three innings.
