Baseball Defeats Mount St. Mary's, 12-5, to Win Third Straight

BETHESDA, Md. - The Georgetown University baseball team used a 13-hit attack to defeat Mount St. Mary's, 12-5, on Tuesday evening. With the win, the Hoyas won their third-straight game overall seventh straight at Shirley Povich Field, and moved to 18-24 on the season, while the Moutaineers fall to 17-24 overall.

Owen Lamon (Herndon, Va./Oakton) picked up his third win of the season, going 5.0 innings and allowing five runs on four hits and four walks while striking out four. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) retired all six batters he faced in 2.0 innings of relief, recording three strikeouts. Matt Randolph (Concord, N.C./Cannon School/Emory) struck out three in an inning of work and Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) fired a scoreless inning with three strikeouts.

Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) recorded four hits and scored three runs to lead the offense, while Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) had a double and a triple and drove in five runs for the second time this season. Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) also had two hits and drove in three runs. Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) was on base four times with a single and three walks and scored three runs.

The Hoyas opened the scoring just three batters into the game, taking a 1-0 lead. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a single by Ryan P. Davis. He crossed the plate on an RBI ground out by McCabe.

Mount St. Mary's grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the third on three walks and a double.

Georgetown answered right back with three runs in the third and four more in the fourth to open a five-run advantage. Ryan P. Davis led off the bottom of the third inning with an infield single and McCabe followed with a walk. Bernauer then lined a triple off of the right field fence to score both runners. He came home on a sacrifice fly by Ryan M. Davis.

In the fourth, a Bernstein double, Ryan P. Davis infield single and McCabe walk loaded the bases with one out. Bernauer drove in Bernstein with a ground out before Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) delivered a two-run single into left. Ryan M. Davis capped the scoring with an RBI single into center, scoring Weisenberg to make it 8-3.

The Mountainers came back with two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to three, 8-5, but the Hoyas scored three more times in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 11-5. After singles by Ryan P. Davis and McCabe to lead things off, Bernauer grounded a two-run double down the right field line. Weisenberg bunted him to third before Ryan M. Davis lined a single up the middle to score Bernauer and give GU a six-run cushion.

Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) launched his first home run of the season, a solo shot over the right field fence to make it 12-5 in the seventh.

Three GU relievers combined to strike out nine batters in four innings of one-hit relief to seal the win.
