WASHINGTON - Georgetown University senior standouts Sam Madsen (Madison, Wis./Edgewood/Cardinal Gibbons [Fla.]) and Molly Fitzpatrick (Manchester, N.H/The Derryfield School) were both named winners of the BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships, Presented by Sunkist. The pair will receive $2,000 each toward graduate studies. Twenty student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST's 10 member institutions) were named as BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete award winners.
Madsen has excelled both in the classroom and on the golf course for the Hoyas. An All-BIG EAST Second Team selection in 2018, he recently captained the Blue & Gray to their second BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship in three seasons. Madsen earned medalist honors for the first time in his collegiate career at the ECU Intercollegiate this season and has finished in the top 10 at the BIG EAST Championship in three of his four seasons on the Hilltop. Off the course, Madsen is a senior finance major in Georgetown's McDonough School of Business and boasts a 3.431 grade point average. He is a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
Fitzpatrick, one of GU's most decorated swimmers, owns a 3.537 GPA as a human science major in Georgetown's School of Nursing & Health Studies. The senior from New Hampshire has earned All-BIG EAST honors, given to individuals who finish in the top three at the BIG EAST Championships, in 15 different events, including seven individual titles. At this year's championships, Fitzpatrick earned All-BIG EAST nods in four events â€" the 200-yard medley relay, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke and the 400-yard medley relay. She won the 200 breast to complete the career sweep, wining the individual title in all four years, and won the 100 breast for the third time in her career. Out of the pool, Fitzpatrick is a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
