Jack Leavitt Coaches Swimming Camp in Thailand

May 3, 2018

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University Swimming & Diving Head Coach Jack Leavitt was selected to represent the United States as a coaching delegate at the US College Sports Camp in Thailand last week. This was the company's sixth sports education program featuring US college coaches.

The event has been sponsored by the Singha Corporation for the past six years, and additional sponsors this year include Mazda and Doi Kham. The camp was attended by 200 youth and parents on April 27-29. By including six US college coaches, the camp attendees had the opportunity to learn about initial eligibility, NCAA rules, recruiting timelines, and how to choose the right college. Coaches taught technical skills, mental training, fitness basics and explained how athletes can use their athletic talents to study in the United States.

"It was a great trip," Leavitt said. "It's always fun to teach all aspects to an eager group of kids. This was different because I was learning so much about their culture as well."

Three major sports were featured this year including basketball, swimming and volleyball. Each camp was sent to different facilities in the greater metropolitan area of Bangkok and other regions of Thailand. The basketball camp was held at the Singapore International School, Bangkok (SISB). Swimming held its portion of the camp at the impressive aquatics center at Thammasat University Rangsit Campus. The volleyball coaches traveled northeast to Nakhonratchasima Province (Korat) where they hosted their camp at Kamtalasor Wittaya School and Suranari Wittaya School. The soccer camp will be held at the Sport Authority of Thailand, Hua Mak stadium and will host international coaches, soccer players, and instructors on May 4-6.

"The world is getting smaller and smaller, and sharing information is good for the future of the sport," said Leavitt. "I hope the kids took a lot away from the camp. Refreshing the basics is important, whether you're 6 years old or 22. I really enjoyed working with this group and it's something I will always remember."
