The Hoyas scored seven runs over the first two innings then, after Villanova came back to tie it, scored a run in the bottom of the eighth to take game one, 8-7

Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) started on the mound and battled through 4.0+ innings, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks while striking out three. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) fired two scoreless innings of relief with one strikeout and Nick Morreale (Lake Elmo, Minn./St. Thomas Academy/IMG Academy) picked up the win with two innings of work, allowing two runs, one earned, with two strikeouts. Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) pitched a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.

Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) had three hits and two RBIs to lead the offense, while Ryan P. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) and Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) each had two hits and an RBI, and Bernstein scored two runs.

The Hoyas wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. With runners on the corners and one out, Bernauer lined a single into right field to plate Bernstein, who had been hit by a pitch. Weisenberg then shot a double down the left field line to score both Eddie McCabe (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) and Bernauer. A single by Ryan M. Davis (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley) drove in Weisenberg to give GU a 4-0 lead.

After Villanova got a run back in the top of the second, a three-run home run by Ryan P. Davis, a blast over the center field fence, extended Georgetown's lead to 7-1.

The Wildcats scored single runs in the third and fourth innings and two more in the fifth to cut the lead to two, 7-5. Another two runs, one of them unearned, tied the game in the top of the eighth.

James Gabor (Wyndmoor, Pa./William Penn Charter School) led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga). Bernstein then lined a single into left, scoring Gabor for the eventual game-winning run.

Swad stranded a pair of base runners, including the tying run at third, for his eighth save of the season.

Game Two: Georgetown 9, Villanova 3
Brent Killam (Nokomis, Fla./Venice) did not allow a hit until the sixth inning, by which point the Hoyas had built a 6-0 lead, including home runs from Bernauer and Shirley, en route to the 9-3 victory.

Killam picked up his sixth win of the season, going 6.0 innings and allowing just one run on one hit while striking out nine. Matt Randolph (Concord, N.C./Cannon School/Emory) struck out five over the final three innings to earn his second save of the year.

Bernauer led the way with three hits, finishing a triple short of the cycle, and five RBIs. It was his third five-RBI game this season and second in the past three games. Shirley had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two, while Bernstein and Ryan M. Davis each had two hits and combined to score five runs. Bernstein and Bernauer were each on base four times.

The Blue & Gray scored single runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. In the first, walks to Bernstein and McCabe preceded an RBI bloop single by Bernauer, which scored Bernstein. Sammy Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Brother Rice) led off the second with a double high off the center field fence and, after a walk to Weisenberg, went to third on a sacrifice bunt. He scored when Shirley laid down a perfect bunt for a single. In the third inning, Bernauer lined his third home run of the season over the right field fence to put GU up by three.

Shirley led off the bottom of the fourth with his second home run of the season. After a single by Bernstein and double by Ryan M. Davis, consecutive sacrifice flies by Ryan P. Davis and Bernauer plated two more runs to give the Hoyas a 6-0 lead.

Villanova got on the board with a solo home run, its first hit of the game, in the top of the sixth, but GU answered right back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Singles by Bernstein and Ryan M. Davis put runners on the corners before Bernauer delivered a one-out double to score both runners. After a single by Ryan P. Davis, Bernauer scored on a ground out by Stevens to make it 9-1.

The Wildcats scored an unearned run in the seventh inning and added another in the eighth, but could not climb any closer.

The two teams will conclude the three-game series at noon on Saturday. Because of impending weather forecasts, the game has been moved up from Sunday. Live stats and a subscription-based video stream will be available at
