No. 15 Women’s Soccer Hosts No. 11 Duke in Home Opener

WASHINGTON – The No. 15 Georgetown women's soccer team (1-0-1) will host No. 11 Duke (1-1-0) on Thursday in its home opener at Shaw Field. The Hoyas are entering Thursday's match with a 1-0-1 record after their opening weekend against Georgia and Virginia Tech. GU shut out Georgia in the season opener on Friday, 1-0, with a goal from graduate student Kyra Carusa (San Diego, Calif./Del Norte/Stanford) in the 14th minute. The victory marked the 33rd shutout for senior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla Country Day/UCLA), putting her at the top of the list in the category at Georgetown. On Sunday, the Blue & Gray managed to draw a 1-1 tie against Virginia Tech in double overtime. Senior Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) put the team on the board in the 20th minute and Schechtman recorded seven saves in the net.
On Monday, Schechtman was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week for her efforts over the weekend.
The Blue & Gray are tabbed as the preseason favorite in the BIG EAST Conference. Schechtman was selected as Preseason BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and junior Meaghan Nally (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) was named Preseason BIG EAST Defender of the Year. They were joined by seniors Amanda Carolan (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) and Farrell who earned spots on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Farrell was also selected to the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List, the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year.
The Duke Blue Devils enter the match on Thursday with a 1-1 record from their opening weekend. Duke shutout then-No. 23 Ohio State on Thursday, 2-0, as both goals were scored in the second half and came from senior Taylor Racioppi and freshman Mackenzie Pluck. On Sunday, the Blue Devils lost to Illinois, 2-1, with the lone goal from Racioppi.
Duke finished the 2017 season 23-2-1 and lost in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Championship game against North Carolina, 1-0. The Blue Devils made it as far as the College Cup Semifinals before tying with UCLA and falling in penalty kicks, 4-3. The squad has two players selected to the preseason All-ACC Team. Additionally, senior forward Kayla McCoy was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
Thursday's game will be the first meeting between the two schools.
