– The Georgetown University field hockey team (2-0) will host Sacred Heart (2-0) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (1-1) this weekend at Cooper Field. The Hoyas will push back against Sacred Heart at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 31 followed by Saint Francis at noon on Sunday, September 2. This weekend starts a three-game home stretch for the Blue & Gray before the squad travels to Villanova for its first BIG EAST contest. Last weekend the Hoyas posted back-to-back shutouts with a 1-0 victory against Davidson and a 2-0 win over Appalachian State. Georgetown has not posted back-to-back shutouts in over 15 years. The Blue & Gray is 2-0 entering the weekend which puts the squad atop the BIG EAST field hockey standings, along with No. 1 UConn and Old Dominion.
Currently leading the Hoyas with three points is senior captain Helena Masiello
(East Greenbush, N.Y. / Columbia). She tallied one goal and one assist last Sunday against Appalachian State. Sophomore Jax van der Veen
(Exton, Pa. / The Agnes Irwin School) and freshman Sydney Stephenson
(Bel Air, Md. / Bryn Mawr School) follow Masiello in points with one goal each. On Tuesday, freshman goalkeeper Ciara Weets
(Springfield, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) was selected to this week's BIG EAST weekly Honor Roll and comes into the weekend with eights saves.
Sacred Heart enters the week with two wins, against Lock Haven and Lehigh, and goals from five different players. Lock Haven outshot Sacred Heart last Saturday 25-10, but the Pioneers managed to score just two minutes into the game and hold the lead throughout for a 3-2 finish. The next day, Sacred Heart squared off against Lehigh and again was outshot, 13-5, but managed to secure the win, 2-1. Sophomore goalkeeper Hailey Power made 21 saves throughout the weekend. The Pioneers placed fifth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Hoyas squared off against Sacred Heart last fall and won, 3-2, with an overtime goal from Anna Farley
(Bel Air Md. / Bel Air).
On Sunday, Georgetown will face the Red Flash of Saint Francis. The Red Flash split games last weekend, defeating Ball State 4-0 and dropping to Miami of Ohio 5-0. On Friday, Saint Francis scored three goals in less than two minutes against Ball State in the first half to secure the game early. In both games, Saint Francis split time between their two senior goalkeepers. The Blue & Gray has faced off against Saint Francis nine times, compiling six wins and three loses. The last matchup was in 2016 and the Hoyas lost 2-1 in overtime.
Following this weekend, the Hoyas will continue action on Friday, September 7 at Cooper Field against LIU Brooklyn before traveling to Philadelphia the following weekend to play Villanova and La Salle.
