Women’s Tennis Plays at Bedford Cup

WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University women's tennis team opened the season in the Bedford Cup Mid-Atlantic Tennis Championships at JTCC in College Park, Maryland this past weekend. Sophomore Sofie Moenster (Oslow, Norway / Ordrup Gymnasium) was the highlight, earning second place in the singles draw and second place in the doubles draw with partner Cecilia Lynham (Chevy Chase, Md. / Holton Arms School).

In the main draw, Moenster advanced to the finals on Sunday, while freshman Elena De Santis (Avellino, Italy / Convitto Nazionale P. Colletta) advanced to the semifinals. Moenster defeated University of Maryland in three sets and Virginia Commonwealth University in straight sets, while De Santis defeated both Virginia Tech and Towson in straight sets. Risa Nakagawa (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula), Renee Repella (Lansdale, Pa. / Germantown Academy) and Sydney Goodson (Great Falls, Va. / Langley High School) all advanced to the round of 16.

In doubles play, Moenster and Lynham advanced to the finals after defeating George Washington 7-6(5) in the tiebreaker. The pair won three matches together over the weekend. In the consolation draw, De Santis and Goodson won their matchup against Towson, 6-3, to take first.

It was a great showing for the Hoyas as the event featured 34 players in singles actions and 16 doubles teams drawn from seven Mid-Atlantic Division I programs.

The Hoyas will be back in action on Thursday, September 20 as they compete in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The four day event will take place in Milwaukee, Wis.
