WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team is in North Carolina for a three-game series against Davidson this weekend. While 34 players made the trip and will be in uniform, there are a few extra Hoyas on the trip as the team's fathers are in town for Georgetown's Dad's Weekend.
 
This is the third-annual Dad's Weekend as Head Coach Pete Wilk started the tradition in 2018 when the team's dads also made the trip for a weekend series at Davidson. Last year, the fathers were all present when the Hoyas opened the season at Wake Forest.
 
"As many people know, I've been an avid Boston Bruins fan since I was a kid," Wilk said. "The Bruins have been doing these dad's trips for a few years and I thought it'd be a great thing to try in our program. I floated the idea out to a few of them and they were extremely interested. We gave it a shot a few years ago and it's been a wonderful experience in its short life span so far."
 
For the weekend, dads and sons room together at the team hotel and, while the dads are not on the team bus, they are present at the field while the team is warming up and taking batting practice. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the players and dads will enjoy a family dinner together. At one of the dinners, the fathers will tell a story about their sons from their childhood, and vice versa.
 
"It is awesome having my dad here and I think he and the rest of the dads enjoy this weekend just as much, if not more, than we do," said senior captain Noah Abdalla. "This has been a blast every year we've gotten the chance to do it, and I think we've been looking forward to this weekend."
 
"It means a lot to have my dad in the stands watching me," said senior captain Freddy Achecar III. "He taught me everything I know about baseball and I couldn't be more thankful to have his constant support. He always sacrifices his time to come see me play, no matter how difficult it may be, and I couldn't ask for anything more."
 
"For me, Dad's Weekend is special because it reminds me of playing baseball as a kid," said senior outfielder Ryan M. Davis. "My dad took me to so many of my baseball tournaments as a kid and we would always be roomies. My dad and I have always been close and he has always been a role model and best friend for me. Being able to share another weekend like a 12-year-old kid playing baseball and hanging out with him is really cool. Also, coming from California I love getting to spend as much time with him whenever I can so having him fly out here means a lot to me."
