Davis’ Grand Slam Lifts Hoyas Over Richmond in 10 Innings

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University baseball team overcame a six-run deficit, tied the game with two outs in the ninth inning and Ryan M. Davis hit a grand slam in the 10th inning to lift the Hoyas to an 11-8 win in extra winnings over Richmond on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 3-6 on the season, while the Spiders fall to 2-7.
 
HOYA HIGHLIGHTS
  • Carter Bosch started on the mound and went 6.0-plus innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits while striking out six. He gave up six runs in the first inning, then settled down to fire five shutout frames before a leadoff home run in the seventh.
  • Chase Walter struck out one in 1.1 innings of relief, while Miller Freeman had a strikeout in 2.1 scoreless innings.
  • Carson Frye struck out the only batter he faced for his first career save.
  • Yareb Martinez was on base four times with a double and three walks.
  • Eddie McCabe had a pair of singles, while AJ Lotsis, Freddy Achecar III and Tony Barreca each had a hit and two walks.
  • Davis finished with six RBIs.
  • The Hoyas were outhit 12-10, but drew 14 walks on the afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Spiders jumped on the board with six runs in the bottom of the first.
  • Georgetown answered back in the top of the third, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring five runs. Martinez had a run-scoring double, Simourian delivered a two-run single and Achecar forced home a run with a bases-loaded walk. Another run scored on a dropped infield fly to make it 6-5.
  • A sacrifice fly by Davis in the top of the fifth scored McCabe to tie the game.
  • Richmond retook the lead with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
  • With two outs in the top of the ninth, Tony Barreca drew a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded to force home the tying run.
  • The Hoyas loaded the bases in the top of the 10th before Davis launched a two-out grand slam well over the fence in center field, giving GU its first lead, 11-7.
  • Richmond scored a run in the bottom of the 10th, but Frye came on with the tying run at the plate and struck out the final batter to preserve the comeback victory.
