Track Teams Put on a Strong Show

Men's

Several members of the GU men's indoor track & field team traveled to University Park, Pa., to participate in the Penn State National Open, held Friday-Saturday, January 26-27, at the Penn State Sports Facility. The meet was based on individual finishes rather than team scoring.

Chris Miltenberg (Jr., East Northport, N.Y./John Glenn) and Corey Smith (Sr., Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) had a terrific day for the Blue and Gray. Miltenberg clocked 8:04.16 to earn runner-up honors in the 3000-meter run, with Smith close behind in fifth place with a mark of 8:06.91. Both men qualified provisionally for the NCAAs.

Nick Reynolds (Sr., Paoli, Pa./Great Valley) and all three GU relay teams returned to the Hilltop with first-place finishes from the two-day meet. Reynolds crossed the finish line of the 400-meter dash in 47.31 seconds to take first place. He then anchored the winning 4 x 400-meter relay team that turned in a time of 7:38.72. Also running legs on the relay with Reynolds were Michael Williams (Fr., Washington, D.C., DeMatha), Robert Wingate-Robinson (So., Mt. Rainier, Md./Northwestern) and James Graham (So., Washington, D.C./Northwestern). Tom Bonner (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Matt Lewis (Fr., Santa Fe, N.M./Santa Fe Prep School), Brandon Roche (Jr., Bothell, Wash./Woodinville) and George O'Loughlin (So., Danbury, Conn./Danbury), made up the squad that sealed a victory in the 4 x 800-meter relay with a mark of 7:38.72. The team of Isidro Pimentel (Sr., Jersey City, N.J./Henry Snyder), Wingate-Robinson, Ezra Richards (So., Far Rockaway, N.Y./Science Skills Center) and Matt Dunn (Sr., Greentown, Pa./Wallenpaupack), recorded 9:50.70 to win the distance medley relay.

O'Connell continues to make the most of his freshman debut, this time with a second-place performance in the 800-meters (1:51.00). Matt Henry (Jr., Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) was eighth in the same race (1:52.14), while Jeff Reinhardt (Jr., Whitesboro, N.Y./Whitesboro) and Richards finished 11th (1:52.50)and 18th (1:53.59), respectively. O'Connell, Henry, Reinhardt and Richards all qualify for IC4As.

Georgetown also qualified four men in the mile run for the IC4As. Pimentel and Kyle Smits (Sr., Bellvue, Wash./Newport) ran four-five in the mile with times of 4:08.86 and 4:10.08, respectively. Dunn's mark of 4:10.71 was good for seventh place, while Dylan Welsh (So., Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs Senior) recorded 4:11.19 for 10th place.

Graham ran 47.74 seconds to secure third place in the 400-meters. Williams was ninth with a time of 49.96 seconds. David Rodriguez (Sr., Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose) and Dan Tebbano (So., Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) ran 13th and 18th in the 3000-meter seeded race. Rodriguez was 13th (8:20.50) and Tebbano was 18th (8:25.95). Graham, Williams, Rodriguez and Tebbano qualify for a chance to participate in the IC4A Championships.


Women's

The Georgetown University women's indoor track & field team competed at the Penn State National Open on Friday-Saturday, January 26-27, at the Penn State Sports Facility in University Park, Pa. The meet was based on individual finishes rather than on team results.

Two Hoyas qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships at the Open. Marni Kruppa (So., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) earned runner-up honors in the 3000-meter run with a time of 9:27.49, while Tyrona Heath (Jr., Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) ran to a third-place finish in the 800-meter run with a mark of 2:08.75.

Nickay Penado (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./John Jay) and Sasha Spencer (Sr., Salem, Ore./North Salem) won their respective races at the meet. Penado clocked 55.22 seconds to take first place in the 400-meter dash, while Spencer's time of 1:11.81 was good for first place in the 500-meters. The GU distance medley relay team of Jill Laurendeau (So., Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central), Penado, Spencer and Erin Sicher (So., College Park, Md./Good Counsel), turned in a time of 11:25.89 to claim victory in that event. Penado and Spencer both qualified for ECAC competition, while the DMR squad qualified provisionally for the NCAAs.

The Hoyas dominated the top 10 spots of the 1000-meter run. Laurendeau and Sicher ran two-three with marks of 2:49.62 and 2:50.44, respectively. Heather Blackard (Sr., Kirkland, Wash./Juanita) and Treniere Clement (Fr., Stow, Ohio/Stow-Monroe Falls) claimed the fifth and sixth place in the same race. Blackard ran 2:51.79 to claim fifth, while Clement's mark of 2:53.12 took sixth. Rose Wetzel (Fr., Seattle, Wash./Blanchet) was 16th in the 1000 with a time of 2:57.25. All five women earned a chance to compete at the ECAC Championships in March.

Others turning in ECAC qualifying marks were: Jamillah Bowman (So., Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer), Emily Enstice (Sr., Potomac, Md./Georgetown Visitation), Colleen Kelly (Fr., Flourtown, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy), Amanda Pape (Fr., Olathe, Kansas/Olathe South), Kate Crowley (Kennebunk, Maine/Phillips Academy) and Monica Hargrove (Fr., New Haven, Conn/James Hillhouse). Bowman ran 1:14.41 to earn fifth place in the 500-meters; Enstice clocked 4:57.01 to claim seventh in the mile run; Kelly recorded 9:50.25 to garner ninth place in the 3000; Pape's mark of 9:54.81 took 14th place in the 3000; Crowley registered 17:26.44 in the 5000; and Hargrove's time of 1:16.28 was good for 15th place in the 500.

The Hoyas' 4 x 800-meter relay squad, composed of Lorianne Gregory (So., Towson, Md./Towson), Emily Reaman (So., Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation), Melissa Richardson (Sr., Las Vegas, Nev./Meadows) and Crowley posted a time of 9:23.59 to finish fourth in the event. Bowman, Heath, Hargrove and Blackard combined to run 3:47.59 in the 4 x 400 to earn fifth place.
