SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Georgetown University men’s and women’s track & field teams swept the 2001 BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships held Saturday-Sunday, February 17 & 18, at The Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y. It was the men’s 11th overall team championship indoor title and the women’s fifth indoor crown.
The GU men scored 130.5 points to secure their fourth consecutive team title and the seventh in eight years. Seton Hall was a distant second with 90 points, followed by Notre Dame in third place with 83 points. Connecticut earned fourth place with 79 points, while Pittsburgh was fifth with 77.5.
The Georgetown women won the Conference title with 111 points. Pittsburgh claimed second place with 94 points, and Miami was third with 86. Rounding out the top five were West Virginia (84.5) and Seton Hall (68).
Sophomore James Graham (Washington, D.C./Northwestern) and junior Davin Williams (Boise, Idaho/Bishop Kelly) returned to the Hilltop with individual titles. Graham clocked 1:03.21 to win the 500-meters, while Williams posted a leap of 49’ ¼” to take first place in the triple jump.
Several Hoyas earned runner-up honors at the league meet. Nick Reynolds (Sr., Paoli, Pa./Great Valley) ran 47.79 to finish second in the 400-meter dash, while Isidro Pimentel (Sr., Jersey City, N.J./Henry Snyder) clocked 1:53.16 to take second in the 800-meter run. Chris Miltenberg (Jr., East Northport, N.Y./John Glenn) took second place in the mile run with a mark of 4:10.43. Matt Dunn (Sr., Greentown, Pa./Wallenpaupack) ran fourth in the mile with a time of 4:14.25.
The 4 x 400-meter relay team scored a second-place finish, while the 4 x 800 squad was third. Hakim Johnson (Jr., Elizabeth, N.J./Elizabeth), Wingate-Robinson, Graham and Reynolds combined to run 3:15.56 in the 4 x 400 for second place. The 4 x 800-meter squad of Ezra Richards (So., Far Rockaway, N.Y./Science Skills Center), Dylan Welsh (So., Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs Senior), Jesse O’Connell (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and Miltenberg were third in 7:37.11.
O’Connell turned in a time of 2:27.66 to claim third place in the 1000-meter. Welsh was fifth in the same race in 2:28.37. Robert Wingate-Robinson’s (So., Mt. Rainier, Md./Northwestern) time of 21.60 seconds in the 200-meter dash was good for third place.
Rounding out the GU point scorers on the men’s side on the second day of competition were: George O’Loughlin (So., Danbury, Conn./Danbury) - 7th in mile run, 4:16.64; Matt Lewis (Fr., Santa Fe, N.M./Santa Fe Prep) – 8th in 500-meters, 1:05.26; Matt Henry (Sr., Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer) – 8th in 1000-meters, 2:34.00; David Rodriguez (Sr., Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose) – 8th in 3000-meters, 8:22.05.
Day two on the women’s side of the BIG EAST Championship saw senior Sasha Spencer (Salem, Ore./North Salem) defend her 500-meter dash title. Spencer crossed the finish line in 1:10.55 to claim first place and set a new BIG EAST meet record. She also earned a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 24.61 seconds. Also defending its title was the Hoyas’ 4 x 400-meter relay team. The squad, composed of Jamillah Bowman (So., Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer), Kori Hamilton (Fr., Glendora, Calif./St. Lucy’s Priory), Nickay Penado (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./John Jay) and Spencer, registered a time of 3:39.89 to take the top spot.
Erin Sicher (So., College Park, Md./Good Counsel) raced to a second-place finish in the mile run with a mark of 4:51.74. Treniere Clement (Fr., Stow, Ohio/Stow-Monroe Falls), Heather Blackard (Kirkland, Wash./Juanita) and Jill Laurendeau (So, Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) finished three-four-five in the 1000-meter run. Clement was third (2:51.33), Blackard fourth (2:51.99) and Laurendeau fifth (2:52.66). Penado was third in the 400-meter dash with a mark of 55.22 seconds. Tyrona Heath (Jr., Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) recorded 2:13.10 to secure fourth place in the 800-meter run. The Georgetown relay team of Clement, Laurendeau, Blackard and Sicher finished the 4 x 800-meter race in 8:55.77, good for second place.
Heath and Bowman ran six and seven in the 500-meters with times of 1:15.30 and 1:15.40, respectively. Also posting sixth and seventh-place finishes were Lorena Adams (Sr., Lakehurst, N.J./Manchester Township) and Colleen Kelly (Fr., Flourtown, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) and Emily Enstice (Sr., Potomac, Md./Georgetown Visitation) and Marni Kruppa (So., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman). Adams was sixth in the mile run (4:57.37), while Kelly was seventh (4:57.57). Enstice garnered sixth place in the 3000-meters (9:43.85), with Kruppa right behind in seventh place 9:46.86.
