The women's track team, currently ranked 25th in the country, traveled south on Interstate 81 to Blacksburg, Va., to compete in the Virginia Tech Challenge along with host VPI, #21Georgia, #23 North Carolina and William & Mary. The Hoyas finished third with 81 points. North Carolina won the meet with 181 points, followed by Georgia in second place with 137. William & Mary took fourth place with 77 points and Virginia Tech was fifth with 68.
Sasha Spencer (Sr., Salem, Ore./North Salem) won the 400-meter dash with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 54.32 seconds. Tyrona Heath (Jr., Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) was fifth in the same event with an ECAC-qualifying mark of 56.89 seconds. Nickay Penado (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./John Jay), Jill Laurendeau (So., Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) and Heather Blackard (Sr., Kirkland, Wash./Juanita) finished two-three-four in the 800-meter run and qualified for ECAC competition in the process. Penado was second (2:09.85); Laurendeau claimed third (2:10.45); and Blackard was fifth (2:12.42).
Brionne Dawson's (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif./Carondelet) won the triple jump with an ECAC-qualifying leap of 39' 10-1/2". Dawson also returned home with a fourth-place finish in the long jump (18' 6"). Emile Mitescu (So., Claremont, Calif./Carlemont) cleared 10' 0" in the pole vault to tie for seventh place.
Colleen Kelly (Fr., Maple Glen, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph's) and Amanda Pape (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) also qualified for the ECAC Indoor Championships in the mile run. Kelly crossed the finish line in 5:00.11 to place fifth, while Pape's mark of 5:03.98 was good for eighth place. The Hoyas also earned ninth thorough 11th place in the mile. Treniere Clement (Fr., Stow, Ohio/Stow-Monroe Falls) was ninth (5:04.64), Carly Nuzbach (So., Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) garnered 10th (5:05.32), and Rose Wetzel (Fr., Seattle, Wash./Blanchet) was 11th (5:08.56).
Spencer, Penado, Heath and Laurendeau also combined to run the 4 x 400-meter relay. The Hoyas' time of 3:41.85 was good for runner-up honors and a chance to compete at ECACs. Also turning in ECAC-qualifying times were GU's two distance medley relay squads. The "A" team of Blackard, Kori Hamilton (Fr., Glendora, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory), Kelly and Marni Kruppa (So., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) ran 11:52.52 to take second place. The "B" squad of Clement, Lori-Ann Gregory (So., Towson, Md./Towson), Wetzel and Pape ran 12:01.94 to secure the third spot in the race.
Emily Dent (Sr., Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) and Emily Reaman (So., Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) crossed the finish line of the 3000-meters in fourth and fifth places. Dent's time was 10:36.83, while Reaman posted 10:45.13.
