GU Women Finish 20th at 2001 NCAA Indoor Championship

FAYETTEVILLE, AR -- The Georgetown University women's track & field team earned a 20th place finish at the 2001 Division I Women's NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, held Friday-Saturday, March 9-10, at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The GU woman tallied 11 points tying for the 20th spot at the NCAA Championship, out of 63 schools competing. UCLA won the NCAA Women's Indoor crown with 53.5 points, followed by South Carolina (40) in second with Clemson (30) and Arizona (30) tying for third. Host team Arkansas was fifth with 24 points.

Georgetown was led by the third-place performance of sophomore Marni Kruppa (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) in the 5,000-meter run. Kruppa's 16:14.13 is third best in Hoya history behind Kate Landau (15:53.64) and Christi Constatin (16:04.55). Her time was just 0:00.55 seconds behind second-place finisher Tara Chaplin of Arizona. Jodie Hughes (Colorado) won the event in a time of 16:08.61. The Hoyas' DMR squad placed sixth posting a 11:17.91, 11 seconds behind first place finisher Stanford (11:06.77). The team, anchored by sophomore Erin Sicher (College Park, MD/Good Counsel) and including juniors Tyrona Heath (Endicott, NY/Union-Endicott) and Heather Blackard (Kirkland, WA/Juanita) and freshman Jill Laurendeau (Manchester, NH/Manchester Central), raced to the ninth best indoor time in Hoya history. Also picking up points for GU was the women's 4x400-meter relay. Sophomore Jamillah Bowman (Ann Arbor, MI/Ann Arbor Pioneer), freshman Kori Hamilton (Glendora, CA/St. Lucy's Priory), and seniors Nickay Penado (Brooklyn, NY/John Jay) and Sasha Spencer (Salem, OR/North Salem) earned seventh in the event with a time of 3:36.56, fourth best in Hoya history. South Carolina won the event in a time of 3:30.08. Spencer also placed ninth in the 400-meter preliminaries with a time of 53.78
