GU Women Earn Third-Place Finish at 2001 ECAC Championship

BOSTON, MASS. -- The Georgetown University women scored 60 points to finish in third place, out of 46 participating schools, at the 2001 ECAC Indoor Track & Field Championship held at the Reggie Lewis Track in Boston, Mass., on Friday-Sunday, March 2-4. Pittsburgh won the ECAC Indoor team crown with 78 points, with Seton Hall only four points back in second place. West Virginia scored 53 points to place fourth and Penn State was fifth with 43 points. Georgetown was led by the first-place performance of its 4 x 400-meter squad, the individual finishes of seniors Sasha Spencer (Salem, Ore./North Salem) and Lorena Adams (Lakehurst, N.Y./Manchester Township) and its 4 x 800-meter relay squad. Jamillah Bowman (So., Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer), Kori Hamilton (Fr., Glendora, Calif./St. Lucy’s Priory), Nickay Penado (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./John Jay) and Spencer combined to run 3:38.02 in the 4 x 400, good for first place. Spencer also finished second in the 400-meters with a time of 53.88. The 4 x 400-meter relay team’s mark and Spencer’s time were both NCAA provisionals. Adams crossed the finish line of the 5000 in 16:48.45 to take second place in that event. Pittsburgh edged out the Hoyas in the 4 x 800-meter relay. Pittsburgh turned in a time of 8:49.38 to win the race, with Georgetown in second with a time of 8:52.00. Emily Enstice (Sr., Potomac, Md./Georgetown Visitation) and Penado contributed two third place finishes to the GU effort. Enstice was third in the 3000-meters with a mark of 9:27.96, while Penado earned the third spot in the 400-meter run in 54.37. Both women qualified provisionally for the 2001 NCAA Indoor Championship. Seventh-place finishes went to Brionne Dawson (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif./Carondolet), Amanda Pape (So., Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) and Colleen Kelly (Fr., Flourtown, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy). Dawson posted a leap of 40’ 7” to claim third in the triple jump. Pape posted 17:16.41 in the 5000, and Kelly recorded 4:53.38 in the mile run. Rounding out the GU point scorers on the women’s side were: Bowman (8th in 800m/1:17.04); Adams (8th in the 3000m/9:42.94..
