GU Women Have Strong Showing at 2001 Duke Invitational

Autumn Fogg wins 1500m with fastest collegiate time in nation

The Georgetown University women's track & field team turned in several outstanding performances at the 2001 Duke Invitational, held Friday-Saturday, April 6-7, in Durham, N.C. The two-day meet showcases some of track & field most talented performers. The Hoyas had one athlete qualify automatically for the NCAAs and several other record NCAA provisional qualifying marks.

Grad student Autumn Fogg (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central), returning to the Hoya fold after redshirting the 2000 outdoor and the 2001 indoor season, looked sensational in the 1500-meter run. Fogg cruised to victory in the 1500-meter run with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:18.71. It was also the fastest time recorded by a collegian in the 1500 this year and improved her PR by 1.20 seconds.

Three Hoyas made the NCAA provisional list in the 800-meter run. Sasha Spencer (Sr., Salem, Ore./North Salem) was the first GU runner across the finish line of the 800. Spencer clocked 2:06.19. Nickay Penado (Sr., Brooklyn, N.Y./John Jay) and Tyrona Heath (Jr., Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) were fifth and sixth in the same race with marks of 2:07.24 and 2:07.40, respectively.

Jill Laurendeau (So., Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) and Heather Blackard (Sr., Kirkland, Wash./Juanita) ran 10th and 12th in the 800 and qualified for the ECAC Championships in the process. Laurendeau's time was 2:08.05, while Blackard turned in 2:09.02. Also turning in ECAC qualifying marks were Colleen Kelly (Fr., Flourtown, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) and Kristen Gordon (Sr., Alamo, Calif./Carondelet). Kelly was 14th in 4:31.07, while Gordon registered 4:32.99 for 17th place.

Erin Sicher (So., College Park, Md./Good Counsel) ran 10:57.34 to claim the third spot in the 3000-meter steeplechase, while Brionne Dawson (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif./Carondelet) finished fifth in the triple jump with an ECAC-qualifying leap of 39' 7-3/4".

Jamillah Bowman (So., Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) won the women's 400-meter developmental run with a time of 55.27 seconds. Marsha Dixon (Jr., Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) and Monica Hargrove (Fr., Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) were fourth and fifth in the same race. Dixon recorded 56.64 seconds and Hargove 57.01.

All three of the Hoyas' relay entries finished in the top five. The team of Spencer, Heath, Penado and Bowman ran 3:37.03 to place third in the 4 x 400-meter relay. The mark was also a NCAA provisional qualifying time. GU's distance medley relay team of Heath, Hargove, Kori Hamilton (Fr., Glendora, Calif./St. Lucy's Priory) and Emily Reaman (So., Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Visitation) earned a fourth place finish in 11:48.89, while Bowman, Spencer, Hamilton and Penado made up the fifth-place 4 x 100-meter squad that ran 46.75 seconds.
