Washington, D.C. ? Georgetown University senior track standout Jamillah Bowman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor) has been selected as the recipient of the 2002-03 Robert A. Duffey Award, as announced by Joseph C. Lang, Director of Athletics. The award is given annually to a Georgetown senior student-athlete who best embodies academic and athletic excellence. Bowman becomes the 18th track & field student-athlete to earn this prestigious award since its inception in 1955.
Bowman has been a key member of Georgetown?s track & field team since stepping foot on the GU campus in 2000. Bowman garnered All-America honors three times as a Hoya. She earned back-to-back All-America honors in the indoor 4 x 400-meter relay at the 2000 and 2001 NCAA Track & Field Championships, as well as an All-America certificate in outdoor 4 x 400 in 2000.
Highlights of Bowman?s senior season include performances from the BIG EAST Indoor and Outdoor Championships and the Penn, Sea and Florida Relays. Bowman, a 2002 team captain, turned in a third-place finish in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles at the 2003 ECAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship and a fourth-place finish in the event at the 2003 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. She also ran a leg on the Hoyas? 4 x 400-meter relay team that earned runner-up honors at ECACs.
Bowman also helped Georgetown to runner-up honors in the 4 x 400-meter relays at both the 2002 ECAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships. In addition, she was a member of the 4 x 400 squad that claimed the second spot at the 2002 BIG EAST Championship. As a sophomore, Bowman clocked 55.89 to take fourth place in the 400-meter run at the USTCA Collegiate Invitational at the Penn State National Open. Bowman was a member of the BIG EAST Champion 4 x 400-meter relay team as a freshman.
Bowman also excelled in the classroom at Georgetown. A Management major with a minor in Psychology, Bowman earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star accolades all four years as an undergrad. She was also named to Georgetown?s Dean?s List and garnered Second Honors.
In addition to her studies and track, Bowman also found time to volunteer in the Washington area community and to study abroad. She was a calculus tutor for the Center of Minority Educational Affairs and acted as a mentor and advisor for the following programs: Peer Tutoring, Kids 2 College, Georgetown Athletic Mentoring Enterprise and the McDonough School of Business. Bowman was also a member of GU's Student Advisory Committee and an advisor for New Student Orientation. She spent the summer of 2002 studying at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
