HARRISONBURG, Va. ? The Georgetown track and field team posted six NCAA Regional qualifying performances, and two Georgetown athletes met the Olympic B standard to provisionally qualify for the USATF Olympic Trials, when the Hoyas competed last weekend at the James Madison Invitational.
Sophomore All-American Chris Lukezic (Auburn, Wash./Auburn) ran a personal record 3:41.59 to edge runner-up Alan Webb (3:42.21) in the 1500m. The time improved Lukezic's previous personal best of 3:43.59, and earned him an NCAA Regional qualification in the event, his second of the season after running 1:48.88 in the 800m on April 9 at the Sea Ray Relays. The mark also met the Olympic B standard of 3:43.00, which provisionally qualifies him for the USATF Olympic Trials on July 9-18 in Sacramento.
Senior Jesse O'Connell (Westminster, Md./Westminster) was the other Hoya runner to pull in an Olympic Trials qualifying time, as he ran 1:47.96 in the 800m. Senior Ali Najjar (Temple Hills, Md./Northwestern) placed third in the same race with a time of 1:49.74 to qualify alongside O'Connell and Lukezic for NCAA Regionals later this month in Florida.
Three Georgetown women also earned NCAA qualifications in the 800m and 1500m events. Senior Treniere Clement (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Monroe Falls) won the 1500m in 4:17.85, and teammate Colleen Kelly (Maple Glen, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) followed in second place with a time of 4:23.75. Senior Maura McCusker (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) also earned an NCAA Regional qualification in the 800m, an event in which she placed third in 2:09.75.
Junior Leilani Greene (Los Osos, Calif./Morro Bay) claimed a victory in the women's pole vault at the James Madison Invitational, but was shy of meeting the NCAA Regional qualifying mark 12-3.5. Greene cleared 11-9.75 to edge second-place finisher Brittany Yates of JMU for first.
The Hoyas have now qualified six women for eight different events at the NCAA Regionals, which are scheduled for June 28-29 at the University of Florida. The men have qualified five individuals in six events, and have had two 4x400m relay teams meet the NCAA Regional standard in that event.
Next on the schedule for the track program is the ECAC/IC4A Championships on May 14-16 at Yale.
