LEWISBURG, PA. ?The Georgetown University men and women?s indoor track and field teams competed at Bucknell University?s Gulden Relays on Saturday, January 8, in Lewisburg, Pa. The Hoyas turned in several solid performances at the meet.
Freshman Carolyn Yates (Warwick, R.I./Toll Gate) and Kelly Otstott (Fairfax Station, Va./Thomas Jefferson) were the top individual finishers on the women?s side.? Yates claimed victory in the mile (5:06.70), and Otstott runner-up honors in the 3000 meter run (10:14.51).? Charity Learn of Mansfield was Yates? closest competition.? Learn finished second in 5:13.39.? Jill Krebs, running unattached, won the 3000 in 10:00.75.
Sophomore Ashley Mondie (Washington, D.C./Milton Hershey (Pa.)) placed second (38? 1-1/2?) in the triple jump, while freshman Alex Baptiste (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon) turned in a seventh-place performance in the same event (34? 9-3/4?).? Adrenna Mayo of James Madison was the winner of the triple jump with a leap of 39? 2-14?.
Sophomores Kandance Ferguson (East Elmhurst, N.Y./Milton Hershey (Pa.)) and Nichole Torpey (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa) finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the finals of the 60m dash.? Ferguson took fourth place with a mark of 7.80 seconds and Torpey was seventh in 8.06.? Narica Offutt of Bowie State was the winner of the 60-meters in 7.78.
The Hoyas had four finishes in the top 10 of the long jump, with Baptiste claiming second (18? ??), Torpey taking fifth (17? 8-3/4?), Mondie placed seventh (17? 7?).? Ashley Hubbard (Fr., Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) was ninth in the long jump (17? 4-1/4?). The top mark in the long jump came from Ashley Huffman with a jump of 19? 3-4?.
Georgetown dominated the relay events. All three GU entries returned to the Hilltop with first-place finishes.? The Hoyas? distance medley relay team won the race in 12:20.96.? Bucknell was a distant second in 12:38.40, and Monmouth third in 12:53.45.? The sprint medley relay squad crossed the finish line in 4:03.8, good for first place.? The mark was the fastest time of the day in the three sections.? The 4x400 Georgetown ?A? relay team clocked 3:54.04 to secure the top spot in the event.? Monmouth ?A? was second in 3:58.51, and Bowie State ?A? took third in 4:02.86.
??????????? On the men?s side, it was Kevin Ward (So., Manhasset, N.Y./Regis) with the top finish individually.? Ward ran 1:09.12 to finish fourth in the 500-meters.? Derrick Brinkley won the 500 in 1:07.14, while Chris Vuono of Monmouth was second in 1:08.19.?
In the long jump, Jesse Patterson (Jr., Elkins Park, Pa./Cheltenham) picked up a seventh-place finish for the Hoyas with a leap of 21? 7-1/2?, while Teddy Presley (Sr., Fairfax, Va./Oakton) finished 20th with a mark of 18? 10-3/4?. Presley also finished eighth in the triple jump (42? 9-3/4?).
Georgetown?s men?s relay teams also finished strong, as GU claimed victory in the sprint medley (3:33.07) and placed second in the 4x400 (3:22.93).? The Hoyas won Section 1 of the sprint medley relay with the fastest mark of the day in 3:33.07, besting Monmouth?s ?A? and ?B? squads with mark s of 3:36.10 and 3:36.45, respectively.? Monmouth won Section 1 of the 4 x 400 with a time of 3:22.32, just edging out the Hoyas? mark of 3:22.93.? UMBC was third in 3:23.26.?
Georgetown will compete in two meets during the upcoming weekend.? One group will travel to Blacksburg, Va., to participate in the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday-Saturday, October 14-15, while another will trek to Fairfax, Va., to compete at the Father Diamond Open to be held at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., on Saturday, January 15.
