Sophomore Ashley Mondie posted two first-place finishes this past weekend to lead the Hoyas at the Eric Kloiber Metro Invitational, held Saturday, April 23, in Emmitsburg, Md. Mondie won the women's triple jump with an NCAA Regional-qualifying leap of 40' 5". She also took first place in the long jump with a mark of 18' 6-1/2".
Jayne Penn and Leilani Greene returned to the Hilltop with runner-up honors. Penn earned hers in the 400m with a time of 57.97, while Greene took second place in the women's pole vault in 11' 1-3/4". Howard's Lauren McNary won the 400 in 56.81.
In addition to Mondie, the Hoyas also took fourth, fifth and eight places in the long jump. Nichole Torpey and Alex Baptiste were fourth and fifth, with marks of 17' 5-1/2" and 17' 3-1/4", respectively. Ashley Hubbard was eighth (16' 3-1/2"). Baptiste also earned third place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.25 and sixth place in the triple jump in 35' 2-1/2".
Kandance Ferguson, Torpey, Hubbard and Mondie claimed third through sixth place in the 200-meter dash. Ferguson was third (25.57), Torpey fourth (25.92), Hubbard fifth (26.31), and Mondie sixth (26.52). The winner was Janicia Charles of Coppin State in 25.38.
Torpey, Ferguson, Mondie and Hubbard also teamed up to run the 4 x 100-meter run. The GU squad crossed the finish line in second place in 46.47. The winner was Howard University in 45.99.
The top finisher on the men's side was Teddy Presley in the triple jump. Presley posted 42' 11" in the triple jump for third place. He also earned a seventh-place finish in the long jump (20' 10"). Jesse Patterson stepped up with a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a 23' 0" mark.
Jonathan Geffrard added a fifth-place finish to the Hoya finishes. Geffrard ran 11.39 in the 100-meter dash.
Winston Weatherspoon picked up a 14th-place finish for GU in the 800-meter run. His time was 1:58.32.
A small group from the men's team ran at the Princeton Invitational on Friday, April 22, with three Hoyas qualifying for post-season competition. Senior Chris Esselborn was the top finisher at the meet. Esselborn clocked 9:15.07 to earn third place in the 3000m steeplechase and qualify for IC4As. Brian Dalpiaz turned in a fifth-place performance of 9:16.13 in the event, while Shane Young posted a mark of 9:20.93 to finish eighth.
Rasheed Thompson and Neil Grosscup also qualified for the IC4A Championships, both in the 1500-meters. Thompson's time of 3:51.72 was good for fifth place, while Grosscup posted a mark of 3:51.75.
Nat Glackin ran 1:53.00 to finish fourth in the 800-meter run. Michael Billington was 15th in the race in 1:55.99.
The Hoyas will head to Philadelphia, Pa., to compete in the Penn Relays on Thursday, April 28 through Saturday, April 30.
