Washington, D.C. - In preliminary action this weekend for the Georgetown University indoor track & field team, two student-athletes posted NCAA provisional qualifying marks on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Buky Bamigboye (Brentwood, Tenn./University School) improved upon her own school-record to finish second overall and first among collegians in the Pentathlon at the Penn State National Invitational. Bamigboye totaled 3,871 points, the third highest total in the NCAA so far this season and the first NCAA provisional time in the conference. She began the day by placing fifth in the 55m hurdles at 8.25 and would be tied for eighth in the high jump, clearing 5'3.25" (1.61m). In the shot put, Bamigboye was fifth, tossing a distance of 35'3" (10.74m) and followed that up with a third place finish in the long jump at 18'6.5" (5.65m). She concluded the afternoon by shooting up the standings with a first place showing in the 800m with a time of 2:19.39.
Also in Penn State National action, sophomore Kenny Mitchell (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) set a new school-record for the second straight week, running 6.80 in the 60m dash in the semifinal round, advancing to Saturday's finals. Mitchell, who ran 6.87 in the preliminary round, was third overall.
Redshirt freshman Kailin Collins (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) qualified for the upcoming ECAC Championships in the 5000m, finishing ninth overall and sixth among collegians with a time of 17:28.91. Also, the Hoya men were second in the distance medly relay at 9:59.00, while the women were sixth at 11:59.84.
At the Terrier Classic in Boston, Mass., redshirt sophomore Melissa Grelli (Cupertino, Calif./Presentation) was the second collegian in the 5000m at 16:21.98, an NCAA provisional time. Her time is currently the second fastest time in the country so far this indoor season and is the 11th fastest indoor 5000m time in school history. Sophomore Natasha LaBeaud (Folsom, Calif./Folsom) qualified for the ECAC Indoor Championships in the 5000m with her time of 17:00.25.
The Hoyas continue action at the Penn State National Invitational and the Terrier Classic tomorrow afternoon.
