Sept. 29, 2007

Washington, D.C. - Red-shirt sophomore Andrew Bumbalough (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) picked up his first collegiate individual cross country title on Saturday, leading the Georgetown men's cross country team to the team crown at the Colonial Inter-Regional Challenge. The women's squad placed second, behind the runner-up finish by red-shirt junior Melissa Grelli (Cupertino, Calif./Presentation).

The Hoya men, ranked 16th in the latest USTFCCCA poll, totaled 26 points to edge host and No. 13-ranked William & Mary by nine. Bumbalough finished the 8k Dunbar Farms course in 24:13.1, just over two seconds ahead of the Tribe's Ian Fitgerald. In addition to Bumbalough, Georgetown placed six student-athletes among the top-nine finishers. Senior Matt Debole (Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) was fourth in 24:21.3 and was followed by a pack of four Hoyas who occupied the sixth through ninth positions. Sophomore Sandy Roberts (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) led the group, finishing in 24:47.4, trailed by red-shirt sophomore Alex Mason (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy Prep) in 24:48.5, red-shirt junior Justin Scheid (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXII) in 24:49.2 and red-shirt sophomore Mike Krisch (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) in 24:50.3.

Meanwhile in the women's race, Georgetown, ranked 20th in the USTFCCCA poll, posted 55 points, placing behind No. 25 Virginia Tech, who had an impressive 23 points. Grelli picked up where she left off last year, finishing the 6k course in 20:34.6 for second-place honors behind the Hokies' Tazmin Fanning (20:21.3). A young group of four sophomores followed Grelli for the HOyas, led by red-shirt sophomore Lise Ogrodnick (Beaconsfield, Que./Beaconsfield), who cracked the top-10 with a time of 21:42.3. Classmates Lauren Gregory (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls), Kelsey Malmquist (Williston Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Renee Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) placed 13th, 14th and 16th , crossing in 21:58.6, 21:59.8 and 22:07.0, respectively.

The HOyas are off for two weeks, before returning to competition on October 13 for the Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind.
