LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Georgetown University men's and women's track and field squad opened the 2008-09 indoor season with a successful trip to the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa. on Saturday. The Hoyas had five first place finishes and 14 in the top-five between the two squads.
Chris Kinney (Stockbridge, Ga./Stockbridge) started things off for the Hoyas in the 60 meter hurdles, winning the prelims and taking first in the final, clocking in with a time of 7.99 seconds. In the same final, Hoyas Kamryn Austin (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) and Biyerem Okengwu (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) tied for sixth place, both crossing the finish line at 8.32.
Also coming up big for the men was Spenser Carter, who won the 60 meter dash in 6.84, which was faster than his qualifying time of 6.96 seconds. In the 200 meters, Sean Suber (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) placed second, clocking in at 22.75 seconds. Suber was also part of the fourth-place 4x400 meter relay along with Danny Harris (Deer Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist), Austin Perron (Philadelphia, Pa./High School of Engineering and Science) and Toby Ulm (Marlborough, U.K./St. John's School and Community College).
In the distance events, Georgetown finished one-two in the 1,000 meters with John Maloy (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) taking first with a 2:35.27 and Kelvin Hill (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) coming in right behind clocking a 2:35.93. GU was also successful in the 500 meters as Ulm placed second in a time of 1:04.04 and Harris followed with a 1:05.98.
Tommy McCoubrey (South Portland, Maine, South Portland) represented the Hoyas in the field, taking second in the shot put throwing it 15.82 meters.
On the women's side, Sarah Wernick (Florence, Mass./Northampton) led the way by winning the 200 meters in a time of 25.12 seconds. She was also a part of the second-place 4x400 meter relay which clocked a 3:51.93. The team was comprised of Wernick, Kyla Cook (Concord, Mass./Concord Carlisle), Abigail Johnson (Willingboro, N.J./Milton Hershey) and Erika Moses (Redlands, Calif./Columbia).
Georgetown also had success in the 500 meters, taking first and second thanks to a run of 1:15.31 seconds by Moses and Johnson following her in with a 1:15.71.
In the field events, Tanore Barrow (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) placed fifth in the shot put with a toss of 12.59 meters.
The Bucknell Invitational marked GU's lone meet of 2008. The team will take a break for finals and the holidays before opening up 2009 at the George Mason Opener on January 4.
