Washington, D.C. - After the first day of the IC4A Championships, held in Boston, Mass., the men's track and field team is in a three-way tie for fourth place with 10 points. Liberty leads the field with 20 points while Binghamton is second with 16. For the women, seven student-athletes completed competition today at the Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind. where the women put up three NCAA provisional qualifying times.
With just four events running to completion today at the IC4A Championship, junior Levi Miller (Belfast Maine, Belfast Area) put up six points for the Hoyas with a third-place performance (8:05.09) in the 3000m. Senior Daniel Nunn (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) followed up in fifth place with a time of 8:06.37 and chipping in another four points.
In the 55m, junior Kenny Mitchell (Atlanta, Ga./Westlake) posted a time of 6.32 to qualify for the final round of the event while freshman Spenser Carter (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) followed up with a time of 6.35. The tandem then qualified for the final round of the 200m with Mitchell's time of 21.67 and Carter's 22.03.
In the mile, freshman Ayalew Taye (Portland, Maine/Cushing Academy) qualified for Sunday's final with a time of 4:15.54 while sophomore Alex Bean (Somers, N.Y./Somers) qualified with a time of 4:10.69. Sophomores Danny Harris (Deer Park, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) and John Maloy (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker) qualified for the finals in the 800m with times of 1:50.93 and 1:51.02, respectively.
Also qualifying for the final day were senior Neil Grosscup (Minneapolis, Minn./Southwest) and redshirt junior Michael Banks (Holden, Mass./Wachusett Regional) in the 1000m with times of 2:24.66 and 2:26.63, respectively. Rounding out the individual qualifiers was freshman Chris Kinney (Stockbridge, Ga./Stockbridge) as he made it to Sunday with at ime of 7.52 in the 55m hurdles.
In the 4x800 relay, the foursome of sophomores Dan Leyh (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) and Kelvin Hill (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Siegel) and seniors Michael Billington (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) and Rasheed Thompson (Herndon, Va./Herndon) qualified for the finals with a time of 7:39.07. The quartet of senior Justin Scheid, freshman Sean Suber (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) and juniors Alex Mason (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy Prep) and Mike Krisch (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) will return for Sunday's final in the distance medley relay as they ran the event with a time of 9:57.89.
At the ECAC Championship, sophomore Abigail Johnson (Willingboro, N.J./Milton Hershey [Pa.]) qualified for the finals in the 400m with a time of 55.25 while junior Avril Ogrodnick (Beaconsfield, Quebec/Beaconsfield) qualified for Sunday's final in the 800m, timing in at 2:12.35. The 4x400 relay squad consisting of sophomore Sarah Wernik (Florence, Mass./Northhampton), senior Alex Baptiste (Blue Bell, Pa./Wissahickon), and freshmen Deidra Sanders (Memphis, Tenn./Eastern) and Kyla Cook (Concord, Mass./Concord) ran the preliminary round with a time of 3:48.31 to qualify for Sunday's final.
At the Alex Wilson Invitational, graduate student Elizabeth Maloy (Loudonville, N.Y./The Academy of Holy Names) hit an NCAA provisional mark with a time of 4:41.08 in the mile while senior Maggie Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) followed up with another NCAA provisional time and seventh-place finish (4:43.35). The women's distance medley relay squad timed in at 11:17.45, good enough for fourth place and an NCAA provisional qualifying time.
The ECAC/IC4A Championships conclude tomorrow, March 9.
