WASHINGTON - After a record-breaking finish on the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational, graduate student Andrew Bumbalough (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) of the 10th-ranked Georgetown University men's cross country team earned BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors, the league announced on Thursday (Oct. 8).
Bumbalough ran a 23:54 at the 8,000-meter race to set a course record at the University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, Wis., claiming first place among the 126 participants - 33 of which came from the BIG EAST. His time helped the Hoyas finish second in the 13-team field that included two other BIG EAST schools in Syracuse and Marquette.
Bumbalough - a five-time All-American - won last year's 8,000-meter race at the BIG EAST Championship (23:55) to pace the team as it took home the conference title. He also won the 2008 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship, covering the five-mile course in 31:36. The Tennessee native was recognized as Mid-Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field / Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for his efforts.
The Hoyas will resume competition on Friday (Oct. 16) when they travel to State College, Pa., for the Penn State National.
