Buky Bamigboye and Sean Bellomy Named BIG EAST Scholar-Athletes

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Georgetown University men's soccer standout Sean Bellomy (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep) and women's track & field All-American Buky Bamigboye have been named two of 32 2008-09 BIG EAST Male and Female Scholar-Athletes for the institution as announced by the league office. All institutional winners will receive a $2,000 scholarship to be used toward graduate studies.

Bellomy, a senior midfielder and team captain, played in 18 games and started two during the 2008 season. He scored two goals as the team went 11-5-3 and advanced to the semi-finals of the BIG EAST Tournament.

The Dallas, Texas native has a 3.768 GPA and is a double-major in finance and management with a concentration in new and small business. He was named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Acadmic All-District First Team.

Bamigboye is an All-American track & field athlete with a 4.0 GPA. Hailing from Brentwood, Tenn., she is a team captain and the school record holder in the pentathlon, the 4x200 meter indoor relay and the heptathlon. Bamigboye competed at the 2007 U.S. Track & Field Championship in the heptathlon and qualified for Olympic trials. She placed 15th overall at the NCAA Championship.

Bamigboye is active in the Georgetown community as a mentor with the Georgetown University Young Scholars and within the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She was also a Teach for America finalist.

The BIG EAST/Aeropostale Scholar-Athlete Awards were established to recognize student-athletes who have achieved success in the classroom and on the field. University of South Florida men's soccer standout Zak Boggs was named the 2008-09 BIG EAST Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year while University of Connecticut field hockey player Jennifer Kleinhans won on the women's side. Both will receive a $4,000 scholarship. Each of the 16 member BIG EAST schools also had a male and female scholar-athlete award winner named with each receiving $2,000 to be used towards graduate studies. The selection was made by the conference's Academic Affairs Committee.
